Numbers_Word_Problems/478485: find two consecutive even numbers if the sum of their squares is 100.
1 solutions
Answer 327839 by amoresroy(333) on 2011-08-06 08:24:48 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!Let x = the first even number
x + 2= the second even number
x^2 + (x+2)^2 = 100
x^2 + x^2 + 4x +4 = 100
2x^2 + 4x -96 = 0
Divide by 2 to get
x^2 + 2x -48 = 0
Solve for x by factoring
(x-6)(x+8)= 0
x = 6
x+2 = 8
The two consecutive even numbers are 6 and 8.
To check
6*6 + 8*8 = 36 + 64 = 100

Age_Word_Problems/477765: rita's age is 3 times anna's. when anna is twice as old as she is now, rita's age will only be twice anna's. how old is each now? 1 solutions
Answer 327378 by amoresroy(333) on 2011-08-04 08:01:06 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!rita's age is 3 times anna's. when anna is twice as old as she is now, rita's age will only be twice anna's. how old is each now?
Let A = Anna's age
3A = Rita's age
2A = age of Ana A years from now
3A + A = Rita's age when Ana's age is twice as old as she is now
= 2(2A)
4A = 4A
A can be any positive number.
Meaning:
When Ana is 1 year old, Rita is 3 years old.
When Ana is 5 years old, Rita is 15 years old.
When Ana is 10 years old, Rita is 30 years old.
...and so on.

Answer 327375 by amoresroy(333) on 2011-08-04 07:44:11 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!two angles are supplementary if one is 30° less then four times the other , find the angles
Let x = the 1st angle
180-x = the 2nd angle
x = 4(180-x) - 30
x = 720 - 4x - 30
5x= 690
x = 138
180-x = 180-138 = 42
The angles are 138 and 42.

II. How far from each city do they meet? 1 solutions
Answer 325973 by amoresroy(333) on 2011-07-28 08:14:12 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!Train A, traveling 70 kilometers per hour (Kph), leaves West heading toward East, 260 miles away. At the same time Train B, traveling 60 mph, leaves East heading toward West.
I. When do the Two trains meet?
II. How far from each city do they meet?
Let x = the number of hours the 2 trains meet after leaving point of origin
x(70+60)= 260
x = 260/130
x = 2
Let d = distance from west where the 2 trains will meet
260-d = distance from east where the 2 trains will meet
d = 70(2)
d = 140 miles(distance from west)
260-d = 260-140 = 120 miles (distance from east)
Answer:
I. The two trains will meet after 2 hours
II. They meet 140 miles from West and 120 miles from East

Graphs/473179: Two persons are to run a race, but one can run 10 meters per second, whereas the other can run 6 meters per second. If the slower runner has a 70-meter head start, how long will it be before the faster runner catches the slower runner, if they begin at the same time? 1 solutions

You can put this solution on YOUR website!Two persons are to run a race, but one can run 10 meters per second, whereas the other can run 6 meters per second. If the slower runner has a 70-meter head start, how long will it be before the faster runner catches the slower runner, if they begin at the same time?
Let x = the number of seconds it will take the faster runner to catch up with the slower runner
Take note that for the faster runner to catch up with the slower runner, his total distance should be equal to 70 meters plus distance traveled by the slower runner.
From the formula of distance (distance = speed times time),the equation should be:
10 x = 70 + 6x
10x-6x = 70
x = 70/4
x = 17.5
It will take 17.5 seconds for the faster runner to catch up with the slower runner.

You can put this solution on YOUR website!Find two consecutive even intergers such that the smaller added to five times the larger gives the sum of 82
Let x = the smaller even integer
x+2 = the larger even integer
5(x+2) + x = 82
5x+10 + x = 82
6x = 72
x = 12 (the smaller integer)
x+2 = 12+2 = 14 (the larger integer)
The two consecutive even integers are 12 and 14.

Numbers_Word_Problems/467521: find two consecutive odd integers if the sum of their squares is 290 1 solutions
Answer 320792 by amoresroy(333) on 2011-07-06 05:19:51 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!find two consecutive odd integers if the sum of their squares is 290
Let x = the smaller odd integer
x+2 = the larger odd integer
x^2 + (x+2)^2 = 290
x^2 + x^2 + 4x + 4 = 290
2x^2 + 4x - 286 = 0
x^2 + 2x - 143 = 0
Solve by factoring
(x+13)(x-11) = 0
x-11 = 0
x = 11
x+2 = 11+2 = 13
The two consecutive odd integers are 11 and 13.

Angles/466716: Two angles are supplementary. The measure of the smaller angle is one- half of the measure of the greater angle. Find the measure of the greater angle. 1 solutions
Answer 319991 by amoresroy(333) on 2011-07-03 06:20:13 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!Let x = the measure of the smaller angle
180-x = the measure of the greater angle
x = (1/2)(180-x)
2x = 180 - x
3x = 180
x = 60
Greater angle = 180 - x = 180 - 60 = 120
The measure of the greater angle is 120 degrees.

Angles/466036: Find the measure of an angle who supplement measures 39 more than twice its complement.
Like to know if I am setting up the equation properly?
Angle = x
Supplement = 180-x
Complement = 90-x
180-x = 2(90-x)+39
180 = 219
x= 39
Can I also say the supplement is 141 degrees and the complement is 56 degrees even though the problem is not requesting to find them?
1 solutions
Answer 319401 by amoresroy(333) on 2011-06-30 11:47:29 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!Yes, you are setting up the equation right.
Just a minor correction...
x - 180 = 219
x = 39
The supplement is 141 degrees and the complement is 51 degrees.

Rectangles/465604: The length of a rectangle is 15 cm longer than the width. when its width is increased by 3 cm and its length decreased by 5 cm. the area of the new rectangle is 20cm2 bigger than the original. find the original dimension of the rectangle. 1 solutions
Answer 319038 by amoresroy(333) on 2011-06-29 07:43:57 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!Let x = width of the rectangle
x + 15= the length of the rectangle
(x+3)(x+15-5) = x(x+15) + 20
x^2+10x+3x+30 = x^2+15x+20
30-20 = 15x-10x-3x
2x = 10
x = 5
x+15 = 5+15 = 20
The dimension of original rectangle are:
width = 5 cm.
length = 20 cm.

Geometry_Word_Problems/464763: if the complemnt of an angle is one third of its supplement.find the angles 1 solutions
Answer 318434 by amoresroy(333) on 2011-06-27 07:19:16 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!if the complemnt of an angle is one third of its supplement.find the angles
Let x = the angle
9o-x = the complement of the angle
180-x = the supplement of the angle
90-x = (180-x)/3
3(90-x) = 180-x
270 - 3x = 180 -x
270 - 180 = 3x - x
2x = 90
x = 45
The angle is 45.
The complement is 45 (90-45).
The supplement is 135 (180-45).
