Probability-and-statistics/758600: A company operates four machines during three shifts each day. From production records, the data in the table below were collected. At the .05 level of significance test to determine if the number of breakdowns is independent of the shift.
Machine
Shift A B C D
1 41 20 12 16
2 31 11 9 14
3 15 17 16 10
A. The number of breakdowns is dependent on the shift, because the test value 11.649 is less than the critical value of 12.592.
B. The claim that the number of breakdowns is independent of the shift cannot be rejected, because the test value 11.649 is less than the critical value of 12.592.
C. The number of breakdowns is dependent on the shift, because the p-value is .07.
D. The number of breakdowns is independent of the shift, because the test value 12.592 is greater than the critical value of 11.649.

Probability-and-statistics/758602: Multiple myeloma or blood plasma cancer is characterized by increased blood vessel formulation in the bone marrow that is a prognostic factor in survival. One treatment approach used for multiple myeloma is stem cell transplantation with the patient’s own stem cells. The following data represent the bone marrow microvessel density for a sample of 7 patients who had a complete response to a stem cell transplant as measured by blood and urine tests. Two measurements were taken: the first immediately prior to the stem cell transplant, and the second at the time of the complete response.
Patient 1 2 3 4 5 6 7
Before 158 189 202 353 416 426 441
After 284 214 101 227 290 176 290
At the .01 level of significance, is there sufficient evidence to conclude that the mean bone marrow microvessel density is higher before the stem cell transplant than after the stem cell transplant?
A. No
B. Yes
C. Cannot Determine

Miscellaneous_Word_Problems/758680: The gasoline gauge on a van initially read 1/8 full. When 9 gallons were added to the tank, the gauge read 1/2 full. How many more gallons are needed to fill the tank?

Answer 461620 by Edwin McCravy(8999) About Me  on 2013-06-17 08:09:51 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!
The gasoline gauge on a van initially read 1/8 full. When 9 gallons were added to the tank, the gauge read 1/2 full. How many more gallons are needed to fill the tank?
Let x = the number of gallons the tank holds when full.

Then initially the tank contained 1%2F8x gallons.

Then when 9 gallons were added, it contained 1%2F8x + 9.

Therefore. our equation comes from:

%27%27%2B%27%27%28matrix%286%2C1%2C%0D%0A%0D%0AThe%2C+9%2C+gallons%2C+that%2C+were%2C+added%29%29%27%27=%27%27%28matrix%283%2C1%2C%0D%0A%0D%0AHalf%2Ca%2Ctank%29%29

expr%281%2F8%29x%27%27%2B%27%279%27%27=%27%27expr%281%2F2%29x

Multiply through by the LCD of 8

x + 72 = 4x
    72 = 3x
    24 = x

So the tank holds 24 gallons.

Answer: When it is half full, it holds 12 gallons, therefore 12
more gallons are needed to fill the tank.

Edwin

Answer 461619 by Cromlix(708) About Me  on 2013-06-17 08:07:43 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!
1/2 - 1/8 = 3/8
Therefore 3/8 = 9 galls
1 full tank = 9*8/3
1 full tank = 24 gallons
1/8 of 24 galls = 3 gallons
So, 3 gallons in initially
9 gallons added to 1/2 mark
12 gallons require to be added to
the tank to fill it.
Hope this helps.

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Find the gradient of BC
Formula: y2 - y1/x2 - x1
11-(-1)/4 - 6
12/-2
-6
As an altitude is at right angles
to the line it emerges from, the
gradient of the line BC and the
gradient of the altitude will
multiply together to give -1
m1 x m2 = -1
So, if the gradient of BC is -6
then the gradient of the altitude
is 1/6.
Setting up the equation:
Using y - b = m(x - a) with m = 1/6 Coords of A (2,1)
y - 1 = 1/6(x - 2)
y - 1 = 1/6x - 2/6
y = 1/6x - 2/6 + 6/6 (1)
y = 1/6x + 4/6
This is the equation but you can
multiply through by 6
6y = x + 4
Hope this helps.

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
a = sum of their ages 3 years ago 80 = sum of their ages now
3 = number of persons
3 = number of years ago

a = 80 - (3)(3)
a = 80 - 9
a = 71

2 is the only even prime number. All other prime numbers are odd.

The sum of an odd number of odd numbers is odd. Since there are five prime numbers (that's an odd number of numbers), if they were all odd then the sum would be odd.

Since the sum is even, one of the five prime numbers must be even. It must be 2, the only even prime number.
