Linear-systems/758929: 4(2y+3)/5= 5(2-y)/2 1 solutions
Answer 461758 by Cromlix(708) on 2013-06-18 10:22:26 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!4(2y+3)/5= 5(2-y)/2
8y + 12/5 = 10 - 5y/2
Denominator = 10
8y + 12/5 = 10 - 5y/2
2(8y + 12) = 5(10 - 5y)
----------------------
10
16y + 24 = 50 - 25y
--------------------
10
Collect like terms.
Change signs as you cross = sign
41y - 26

Answer 461751 by htmentor(807) on 2013-06-18 09:31:03 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!Let n = the number of people who had promised to contribute
Let c = the pledged contribution amount
Since the required amount was $600, we have
n*c = 600
The new number of contributors = n - 5, and their contribution amount = c + 10
The amount raised is still the same, so we can write
(n-5)(c+10) = 600
Solve for c in the 1st equation, substitute in the 2nd:
(n-5)(600/n+10) = 600
Multiply and collect terms:
600 + 10n - 3000/n - 50 = 600
10n - 3000/n - 50 = 0
Multiply through by n, divide by 10:
n^2 - 5n - 300 = 0
Factor:
(n+15)(n-20) = 0
This gives n=20 (positive solution)
So the actual number of subscribers is 20-5 = 15
Their contribution was $40
Check:
15*40 = (15+5)(40-10) = 20*30 = 600

-----
Let the original # of people be "x.
Average contribution would be 600/x dollars.
----
New # of people is (x-5).
---
Contribution from x-5 people = $10
-----
Equation:
(x-5)(x/600 + 10) = 600
--------------
(x-5)(x+6000)/600 = 600
---
(x-5)(x+6000) = 360000
--------------------------
x^2 + 6000x-5x-30000 = 360000
x^2 + 5995x = 390000
x^2 + 5995x - 390000 = 0
-------------------
x = 64.36...
---
Note: That doesn't look right.
The answer should be a whole number.

logarithm/758931: During an epidemic , the number of people who have never had the disease and who are not immune ( they are susceptible) decreases exponentially according to the function f(t) = 15,000e^-.05t, where t is time in day. find the number of susceptible people at each time.
(a) at the beginning of the epidemic
(b) after 10 days
(c) after 3 weeks 1 solutions
Answer 461756 by Cromlix(708) on 2013-06-18 10:15:19 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!f(t) = 15,000e^-.05t
a) At the beginning t = 0
f(t) = 15,000e^-.05x0
f(t) = 15,000e^0
as e^0 = 1
f(t) = 15,000
b) after 10 days
f(t) = 15,000e^-.05 x 10
f(t) = 15,000e^-.5
f(t) = 9097.9
c) after 3 weeks
f(t) = 15,000e^-.05 x 21
f(t) = 15,000e^-1.05
f(t) = 5249.

Answer 461755 by Cromlix(708) on 2013-06-18 10:00:05 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!A square with a diagonal = 8ins
8^2 = 64
64/2 = 32
A side of this cube measures root 32
Volume of cube = length^3
(root 32)^3 = 128 square root 2 ins^3
Surface area = length^2 x 6
= (root 32)^2 x 6

Diagonal^2 = 36.9
Diagonal = square root of 36.9
Diagonal = 6.1ft (1 decimal place)

Age_Word_Problems/758940: Two years ago, a man was 7 times as old as his son. In 3 years time, he will be only 4 times as old as son. Find the present age of the man and of his son. 1 solutions
Answer 461733 by Menjax(41) on 2013-06-18 06:10:20 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!Defince unknowns
Let M = Man's current age
Let S = Son's current age
Dissect the question to get your equations
(M-2) = 7(S-2) #1
(M+3) = 4(S+3) #2
From #1 M = 7S-12
Sub above into #2
7S-9=4S+12
3S=21
S=7
Sub S into #1
M-2=7(7-2)
M=37
So the man's current age is 37 years old and his son's age is 7 years old
