Please reply! 1 solutions
Answer 352832 by algebrahouse.com(1079) on 2011-11-27 18:30:47 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!"Pizzazz Publications is having some books printed. The printer charges $800 plus $5 per book. How many books can be printed for $4000?"
x = number of books
800 + 5x = 4000 {charges 800 plus 5 per book equals 4000}
5x = 3200 {subtracted 800 from both sides}
x = 640 {divided both sides by 5}
640 books can be printed

You can put this solution on YOUR website!"Two scooters travel from the same point in the same direction, leaving at the same time. The faster scooter travels at twice the speed of the slower scooter. After three seconds, the faster scooter has traveled 6 feet more than the slower scooter. What is the speed of each scooter?
Distance = rate x time
D = rt
slower scooter
r = r
t = 3 {after 3 seconds}
D = 3r {distance = rate x time}
faster scooter
r = 2r {twice the slower scooter}
t = 3 {after 3 seconds}
D = 6r {distance = rate x time}
After 3 seconds the faster scooter was 6 feet in front of slower scooter:
3r + 6 = 6r {slower scooter distance plus 6 = faster scooter distance}
6 = 3r {subtracted 3r from both sides}
r = 2 {divided both sides by 3}
2r = 4 {substituted 2, in for r, into 2r}
slower scooter's speed is 2
faster scooter's speed is 4

Geometry_Word_Problems/536672: The area of a rectangular wall in a classroom is 165 square feet. Its length
is 4 feet longer than its width. Find the width of the wall of the
classroom. 1 solutions
Answer 352523 by algebrahouse.com(1079) on 2011-11-25 22:59:20 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!"The area of a rectangular wall in a classroom is 165 square feet. Its length
is 4 feet longer than its width. Find the width of the wall of the
classroom."
x = width
x + 4 = length {the length is 4 longer than the width}
Area of a rectangle = width x length
x(x + 4) = 165 {area of a rectangle is width x length}
x² + 4x = 165 {used distributive property}
x² + 4x - 165 = 0 {subtracted 165 from both sides}
(x + 15)(x - 11) = 0 {factored into two binomials}
x + 15 = 0 or x - 11 = 0 {set each factor equal to 0}
x = -15 or x = 11 {subtracted 15 and added 11}
x = 11 {width of a rectangle cannot be negative}
width = 11 ft

Answer 352515 by algebrahouse.com(1079) on 2011-11-25 22:07:23 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!"Serena's father is twenty-six years older than serena. In ten years, the sum of the ages will be eighty. What are their present ages?"
x = Serena's age now
x + 26 = father's age now
x + 10 = Serena's age in 10 years
x + 36 = father's age in 10 years {added 10 on to each one}
x + 10 + x + 36 = 80 {in ten years the sum of the ages will be 80}
2x + 46 = 80 {combined like terms}
2x = 34 {subtracted 46 from both sides}
x = 17 {divided both sides by 2}
x + 26 = 43 {substituted 17, in for x, into x + 26}
Serena is 17
her father is 43

4x - 20
-8
-------- {factored 4 out of bottom}
4(x - 5)
-2
------- {cancelled -8 and 4}
x - 5
Restrictions on variable would be those that make the denominator equal to 0.
Variable restriction: x cannot be equal to 5 {that would make denominator 0}
