Answer 223586 by TX911(36) on 2010-06-09 01:36:05 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website! This is written in slope-intercept form. Therefore the slope of this line is 3/2 and the y intercept is -1. So plot your point on the y axis @ -2 and use the slope to find your x intercept.

Polynomials-and-rational-expressions/307941: i need to factor this by grouping and could use some help
(x - 2)(x + 1) = 4 1 solutions
Answer 220220 by TX911(36) on 2010-05-24 11:56:04 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!First, multiply the two expressions together using the FOIL method: x^2+x-2x-2=4
Now set the equation equal to 0 by subtracting 4 from both sides: x^2+x-2x-6=0
Now we can do some simplifying: x^2-x-6=0
You can factor from here I think but here you go: (x-3)(x+2)
Hope this helps

Geometry_Word_Problems/307954: draw a rectangle that has an area of 6 square centimetres and a perimeter of 14 centimetres. 1 solutions
Answer 220219 by TX911(36) on 2010-05-24 11:51:47 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!A=LW
(x)(y)=6
Perimeter=2(w)+2(L)
2(w)+2(L)=16
This one you can see can be done in your head without much work:
6x1=6
and
6(2)+1(2)=14
So our length would be 6cm and our width would be 1cm
I can't draw on here but I'm sure you can take it from here.
Hope this helps

Rational-functions/307957: how do you factor 4x2+12x+8 1 solutions
Answer 220217 by TX911(36) on 2010-05-24 11:41:58 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!I would divide through this equation by my leading coefficient which is 4 so we are left with x^2+3x+2. Now we need to see what numbers times each other =2 and added together equal 3. 2x1=2 and 2+1=3 so it looks like we found this one pretty easily. Our answer would be (x+2)(X+1)
Hope this helps

Linear-equations/307947: find the slope and y-intercept
17y+4x+3=7+4x 1 solutions
Answer 220216 by TX911(36) on 2010-05-24 11:34:58 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!Simplify and then write in slope intercept form.
17y+4x+3=7+4x
subtracting 4 from both sides: 17y+3=7 subtracting 3 from both sides: 17y=4
dividing both sides by 17: y=4/17
Therefore, the slope is 0 and the y-intercept =4/17
This has no slope and is a straight, horizontal line that intercepts the y axis at 4/17ths
The reason the slope is 0 is because this particular line does not intercept the X axis at any point as it is simply a horizontal line

test/307948: how do you factor 6x-30?
1 solutions
Answer 220215 by TX911(36) on 2010-05-24 11:30:11 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!Find a common divisor of both numbers and in this case 6 is of course divisible by 6 and 30 is also divisible by 6. So if you divide 6 by 6 we are just left with an x and if you divide -30 by 6 we are left with -5. So factored, this expression would read simply (x-5)

Systems-of-equations/307943: 6u = -24 i have been told the answer is -18 by taking 6 - 24 u= -18
24u = -96 told to do 24 - 96 = -72 and divide -72 by 18 = -4
Question is where does the 18 in the second question come from, from the question above? why is it not a -18 anymore, as though u = -18
thankyou 1 solutions
Answer 220214 by TX911(36) on 2010-05-24 11:24:55 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website! You have been told wrong
6u=-24 you would divide both sides by 6 to isolate your variable
u=-4
to solve the second equation in the system you would simply replace the "u" with the value we now know "u" to be which is -4
so 24(-4)= -96

Trigonometry-basics/307927: Can you help me figure out how to solve for x in this problem? 10^2x =100 1 solutions
Answer 220208 by TX911(36) on 2010-05-24 10:51:15 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!10^ 2(times what) will equal 100.
well we know that 10^2=100 so in order for the problem to remain just 10^2 the "x" would have to equal 1. Because 2x1= 2 therefore the exponent would remain just the square thereby equaling 100
Hope this helps

Answer 220207 by TX911(36) on 2010-05-24 10:49:11 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!don't "factor." Instead use synthetic division
3 1 2 -5 30
3 15 30
1 5 10 60
Are you sure the problem isn't x^3+2x^2-5x-30? And are you sure you're not dividing by x+3?
Because the problem you posted has a remainder of 60. 1x^2+5x+10 R 60
But if one of the signs is wrong in what you posted, then the final number would be -30 instead of positive 30 and would leave us with no remainder.

Rational-functions/307282: (x+2) (x^2-x-6)
----- / ----------
(x+5) (x^2+7x+10)
divide rational equation. 1 solutions
Answer 219849 by TX911(36) on 2010-05-22 09:28:38 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website! We can use "synthetic division" here. Take the expression you're dividing by and figure out what x has to equal in order to make the expression 0. In this case, x+5=0
x=-5
Now we're ready to use synthetic division.
-5 1 7 10
1 -5 -10
so our answer is 1x-2
Hope this helps

Functions/304776: how do i write this function to solve it
f(x)=-3x+9
g(x)=8x+7
find f(g(x))
this is what i did but did not get the right answer: -3x+9(8x+7) i also tried it like this: (-3x+9)(8x+7) 1 solutions
Answer 218249 by TX911(36) on 2010-05-15 10:48:29 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!you would write it as:
-3(8x+7)+9
-24x-21+9
-24x-12
Remember, for a composite function where f(g(x)), you simply compose the functions by substituting g(x) in anywhere you see an x in the "f" function.
f(x) is -3x+9 and g(x) is 8x+7. So again, for f(x): -3(insert g(x) here) +9 and then simplify.
Hope this helps

Miscellaneous_Word_Problems/304475: In the linear equation of y=0.15x +0.79 what is the slope or rate of change of this equation? What would be the y-intercept and what does the y-intercept represent? If the growth continues, what would be the price of gas in 2018? Please advise. Thank you. 1 solutions
Answer 218207 by TX911(36) on 2010-05-14 22:44:21 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website! This is written in slope intercept form. Therefor, the slope would be .15/1 and the y intercept would be 0.79
To figure out how expensive gas will be in 2018 we would need to know the year in which the equation is present so we can determine how many years after the intial year 2018 is. IS that info provided?

Quadratic_Equations/303014: x^2+10x+10=0
I know the answer is neg 5 plus or minus the square root of 15 but why? 1 solutions
Answer 217209 by TX911(36) on 2010-05-10 22:13:58 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website! The quadratic formula reads :
So it would be
so basically -10 +- sqrt of 100-40 which is 60/ over 2 because your leading coefficient of x^2 is actually a 1. Factor out your square root of 60 which would be 2 square root 15. So now we have -10+- Divide everything on the top by your denominator of 2 to get
The denominator of course cancels. So that's what you're left with

Rational-functions/298913: I need to find the value of the discriminant and the nature of the solutions
5x^2-7x-3=0
Is there 2 imaginary solutions?
One real solution? Or two real solutions? 1 solutions
Answer 214944 by TX911(36) on 2010-04-30 21:02:37 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website! The discriminant is calculated from the numbers under the radical sign of the quadratic formula, that is to say the discriminant=
So for your particular problem: which should equal 119 if my calculation is correct.
Rules of discriminants and their solutions:
if b^2-4ac >0 = Two unequal real solutions
if b^2-4ac = 0 = One real solution
if b^2-4ac <0 = no real solutions or two imaginary solutions.
So in this case, obviously 119 > 0 so you have 2 real solutions!
Hope this helps!

Linear-systems/298834: In the problem 3x+4y=6 5x+2y=-4 how do you know that you need to multiply by -2?
1 solutions
Answer 214926 by TX911(36) on 2010-04-30 18:33:35 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!Because when using the addition method:
3x+4y=6
5x+2y=-4
we need to solve for y first because if we solve for x first we're going to be dealing with fractions which we want to avoid in the interest of simplicity. So what do we need to multiply the second equation by in order to set the y's to where they cancel each other? That's right, -2 because 2*-2 =-4. Now when we add the top equations 4y to the bottom equations -4y we get zero which now let's us solve for y. Don't forget to multiply the other numbers in the second equation by -2 as well. It should look like -2(5x+2y=-4) and our result would be -10x-4y=-8.

Travel_Word_Problems/297533: A car travels 196 miles in 3 hours and 30 minutes. How many miles does it travel per hour? 1 solutions
Answer 214243 by TX911(36) on 2010-04-27 22:06:05 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!Let's do it the long way first. We need to convert the hours to minutes. 3hr= 180 minutes. 180+30= equals 210 minutes. So now we can rewrite it as : The car travels 196 miles in 210 minutes.
Distance/Time= Velocity
196/210= 0.93 miles/min.
Now we multiply 0.93 x 60 because there are 60 minutes in a hour. That will tell us how many miles per hour the car is traveling. So 0.93333333x60= 56.0 mph
Now let's do it the short and easier way: we still use the same equation: Distance/Time= Velocity.
Only this time we will simply convert the 3 hours and 30 minutes into hours which is easy enough. 3 hours and 30 minutes= 3.5 hours obviously.
So now:
Distance(196)/Time(3.5)= 56 miles/hr.
The long way is a headache but will give you good practice at converting numbers for equations which you will have to do ALOT as you move on in mathematics education.
Hope this helps!
