Age_Word_Problems/573560: When Billy turned 14 years old, his father was 42 years old, which is three times Billy’s age at the time. Today is Billy’s birthday, and Billy’s father is now twice as old as Billy. How old is Billy?
1 solutions

Answer 368825 by Maths68(1474) About Me  on 2012-02-16 00:23:34 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Let
age of Bill now = b
age of Father now = f

Billy’s father is now twice as old as Billy
f=2b..............(1)

Let x years ago
Bill was
b-x = 14..............(2)
Father was
f-x = 42..............(3)

Put the value of f from (1) to (3)
f-x = 42..............(3)
2b-x=42...............(4)
Subtract (2) from (4)
2b-x=42...............(4)
-b+x = -14..............(2)
-----------
b=28
Put the value of b in (1)
f=2b..............(1)
f=2(28)
f=56

age of Bill now = b = 28 years old
age of Father now = f = 56 years old

Age_Word_Problems/573592: hans is 3 years younger than his brother emil. in 8 years the sum of their ages will be 61. how old is hans plz i need this in 30 mins plz help me im stuck
1 solutions

Answer 368822 by Maths68(1474) About Me  on 2012-02-15 23:59:35 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!

Let
Present age of Hans = h
Present age of Emil = e

Hans is 3 years younger than his brother Emil.
h=e-3.................(1)

In 8 years
Hans will be = h+8
Emil will be = e+8

Then

The sum of their ages will be 61
(h+8)+(e+8)=61
h+8+e+8=61
h+e+16=61
h+e=61-16
h+e=45..................(2)

Put the value of h from (1) to (2)
h+e=45..................(2)
e-3+e=45
2e-3=45
2e=45+3
2e=48
2e/2=48/2
e=24

Put the value of e in (1)
h=e-3.................(1)
h=24-3
h=21

Present age of Hans = h = 21 years old
Present age of Emil = e = 24 years old

Graphs/573502: what is the equation of the point (3,2) and has a slope of 2?

1 solutions

Answer 368803 by Maths68(1474) About Me  on 2012-02-15 21:27:46 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Given
Point (x, y)=(3,2)
Slope = m = 2
Equation of the line slope-intercept form
y=mx+b
Put the given values of point and slope in above equation in order to know the y-intercept
2=(2)(3)+b
2=6+b
2-6=b
-4=b
b=-4
y-intecept = b = -4
Again put the values of slope and y-intercept in the equation of the line slope-intercept form
y=2x+(-4)
y=2x-4
Above equation is required equation of the line.

Let
1st number = x
2nd number = y
The sum of 3 times a number and 4 times another number is 43
3x+4y=43.................(1)
Five times the first number is 3 less than four times the opposite of the second number

1 solutions

Answer 368439 by Maths68(1474) About Me  on 2012-02-14 04:15:01 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Let
Quarters=x
Nickels=32-x
Value of a Quarter = $0.25
Value of a Nickle = $0.05
Total value of all coins = $3.6
(Value of a Quarter)(Quarters)+(Value of a Nickel)(Nickels)= Total value of all coins
0.25x+0.05(32-x)=3.6
0.25x+0.05(32-x)=3.6
0.25x+1.6-0.05x=3.6
0.25x-0.05x=3.6-1.6

9x%5E2%2B21x-8=0
Solved by pluggable solver: SOLVE quadratic equation with variable
Quadratic equation ax%5E2%2Bbx%2Bc=0 (in our case 9x%5E2%2B21x%2B-8+=+0) has the following solutons:

x%5B12%5D+=+%28b%2B-sqrt%28+b%5E2-4ac+%29%29%2F2%5Ca

For these solutions to exist, the discriminant b%5E2-4ac should not be a negative number.

First, we need to compute the discriminant b%5E2-4ac: b%5E2-4ac=%2821%29%5E2-4%2A9%2A-8=729.

Discriminant d=729 is greater than zero. That means that there are two solutions: +x%5B12%5D+=+%28-21%2B-sqrt%28+729+%29%29%2F2%5Ca.

x%5B1%5D+=+%28-%2821%29%2Bsqrt%28+729+%29%29%2F2%5C9+=+0.333333333333333
x%5B2%5D+=+%28-%2821%29-sqrt%28+729+%29%29%2F2%5C9+=+-2.66666666666667

Quadratic expression 9x%5E2%2B21x%2B-8 can be factored:
9x%5E2%2B21x%2B-8+=+9%28x-0.333333333333333%29%2A%28x--2.66666666666667%29
Again, the answer is: 0.333333333333333, -2.66666666666667. Here's your graph:
graph%28+500%2C+500%2C+-10%2C+10%2C+-20%2C+20%2C+9%2Ax%5E2%2B21%2Ax%2B-8+%29
