Coordinate-system/738551: Can you please help me find the slope of a line perpendicular to each given line. y=-5/3x+3
1 solutions

Answer 450849 by MathLover1(6816) About Me  on 2013-04-16 22:16:00 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!
given line: y=-%285%2F3%29x%2B3...compared to slope-intercept form y=mx%2Bb, you see that slope m=-%285%2F3%29
the slope of a line perpendicular to given line will have a slope m%5Bp%5D=-1%2Fm
so, a slope is m%5Bp%5D=%28%28-1%29%2F%28-5%2F3%29%29 => m%5Bp%5D=%28-1%2A3%29%2F-5 => m%5Bp%5D=3%2F5

Coordinate-system/738549: please help me find the slope of a line parallel to each given line. y=-2x+1
1 solutions

Answer 450848 by MathLover1(6816) About Me  on 2013-04-16 22:09:01 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!

you are given a line +y=-2x%2B1, and it is already in slope-intercept form y=mx%2Bb where m=slope and b=y-intercept
so, the slope of given line +y=-2x%2B1 is m=-2
by definition, a line parallel to given line has same slope; so, m%5Bp%5D=-2

Linear-systems/738474: How do i solve a linear equation? I understand it involves a variable and number line.

1 solutions

Answer 450827 by MathLover1(6816) About Me  on 2013-04-16 19:49:22 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!

In general, to solve an equation for a given variable, you need to isolate the variable;
means variable=some-number, where some number is the answer they're looking for
an example:
Solve
x-8+=+-1
you need to get the x all by itself on one side of the "equals" sign, and some number on the other side
so, x+-8+=-1 add 8 to both sides to eliminate -8 left of the equal sign;remember: no matter what kind of equation you're dealing with -- linear or otherwise -- whatever you do to the one side, you must do the exact same thing to the other side
x+-8%2B8+=+-1%2B8
x+-cross%288%29%2Bcross%288%29+=+7

if QRST is a rectangle, then each angle is 90°
so, angle Q=90°
if angle Q is equal to 10x-80, then 10x-80=90
10x-80=90.....solve for x
10x=90%2B80
10x=170
x=170%2F10
x=17

if y varies directly with x, then we have a linear function in the form y=kx
if y=8 and x=4, then we have
8=k%2A4
k=8%2F4
k=2
so, your function is: y=2x

Assume p > q. Since p, q are both odd, p - q ≥ 2. Also, q ≥ 3, p ≥ 5.
Since p² - q² = (p + q) (p - q) where p + q, where p + q > p ≥ 5, and p - q ≥ 2, p² - q² is composite.

I have $9.45 in quarters and dimes in my pocket.
If there are 48 coins in all, there is x quarters and 48-x dimes

.10%2848-x%29+%2B+.25x+=+9.45
4.8+-+0.10x+%2B+.25x+=+9.45
+-+0.10x+%2B+.25x+=+9.45-4.8
+.15x=+4.65
x+=+4.65%2F.15
x+=+31................quarters
and dimes:

3x-y%2B5=0....first solve for y to express the equation of a line in- slope-intercept form y=mx%2Bb where m is a slope and b y-intercept
3x%2B5=y
or
y=3x%2B5.......slope-intercept form; so, the slope is m=3 and y-intercept is b=5

Answer 450457 by MathLover1(6816) About Me  on 2013-04-14 19:37:30 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!

To find a counter example to "%28x%2B+y%29%5E2 is NOT x%5E2%2B+y%5E2", you must use x and y so that %28x%2By%29%5E2=+x%5E2%2B+y%5E2.
Presumably you know that %28x%2B+y%29%5E2=+x%5E2%2B+2xy%2B+y%5E2. That means you must find x and y so that x%5E2%2B+2xy%2B+y%5E2=+x%5E2%2B+y%5E2.
cross%28x%5E2%29%2B+2xy%2B+cross%28y%5E2%29=+cross%28x%5E2%29%2B+cross%28y%5E2%29...notice that the squares on both sides cancel
What does that leave you with?
2xy=+0...this is true only if only x=0 or y=0, or both x=0 and y=0
so, it proves that %28x%2B+y%29%5E2%3C%3Ex%5E2%2B+y%5E2
