Matrices-and-determiminant/323684: what is a dependent matrix?
what is an inconsistant matrix?
How do you can you tell? 1 solutions
Answer 231635 by Fombitz(13828) on 2010-07-19 14:11:08 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!Dependent matrix would have a determinant of zero and when you looked at the rows, they would be multiples of each other. The right hand side would also have the same multiplier from line to line.
As an example,
[A]=
[x]=
[b]=
The first equation would be and the second equation would be . So the second equation is twice the first equation. They are the same line.
.
.
.
An inconsistent matrix would also have a determinant of zero but the multiplier to go from one row to the next on the left hand side does not equal to the right hand side multiplier.
Here's an example,
[C]=
[x]=
[b]=
where the equations are and , the lines are parallel.

Volume/323703: There is a flood. A large culvert washes out. To repair the road workers replace the old 6' by 25' culvert (cylinder) with two 4'x 25' culverts. Which can carry the greatest volume of water; the two new smaller culverts or the old larger one? 1 solutions
Answer 231632 by Fombitz(13828) on 2010-07-19 14:03:30 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website! The volume of a cylinder is,

The old culvert could hold,

The two new culverts can hold,

As you can see the old culvert holds more than the new ones (32 vs. 36).

You can put this solution on YOUR website!Just by looking.
You should have two terms : one with an even power of the variable, the other a constant term.
It would look like,
 but could also look like,
 or
You just need to be able to reduce it to a form like,

Just like in the examples,

Probability-and-statistics/323691: The amount of soda a dispensing machine pours into a 12 ounce can of soda follows a normal distribution with a mean of 12.03 ounces and a std deviation of 0.2 ounces. what portion of the soda can contains more than the 12 ounces advertised 1 solutions
Answer 231615 by Fombitz(13828) on 2010-07-19 13:12:55 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!Find the zscore for 12 ounces.

So the population that contains from 0 to 12 ounces would be 44.04%, the remaining population would contain greater than 12 ounces.

.
.
.
55.96% would have more than 12 ounces.

Probability-and-statistics/323553: Two dice are rolled and one letter is chosen from a, b or c. Use the counting principle to determine the number of possible outcomes.
1 solutions
Answer 231518 by Fombitz(13828) on 2010-07-18 23:29:01 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!Rolling two dice gives you 36 possible outcomes.
So for each letter choice you'd have 36 possible outcomes.
