Answer 234509 by Fombitz(13828) About Me  on 2010-07-31 09:25:10 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!
1.2x-6y=3
2.4x%2B9y=+-1
Multiply eq. 1 by (-2) and add to eq. 2,
-4x%2B12y%2B4x%2B9y=-6-1
21y=-7
highlight%28y=-1%2F3%29
Then use either equation to solve for x.
2x%2B2=3
2x=1

Quadratic_Equations/327379: I saw this problem in my textbook:
A rectangle has a perimeter of 42 miles and an area of 104 square miles. Find the dimensions of the rectangle.
My question is... how do you get the answer? I've tried making two equations and solving for one variable, but it didn't work.

Answer 234508 by Fombitz(13828) About Me  on 2010-07-31 09:22:11 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!
The formula for perimeter of a rectangle is,
P=2%2AL%2B2%2AW=42
1.L%2BW=21
The formula for area of a rectangle is,
A=L%2AW=104
2.L%2AW=104
From eq. 1,
L=21-W
Substitute into eq. 2,
%2821-W%29W=104
21W-W%5E2=104%7D%7D%5D%0D%0A%7B%7B%7BW%5E2-21W%2B104=0
You can factor this quadratic,
%28W-13%29%28W-8%29=0
Two solutions:
W-13=0
W=13 Then from above,
L%2B13=21
L=8
.
.
.
W-8=0
W=8
L=13
.
.
.
The rectangle is 13 miles by 8 miles.

Write a concentration equation.
Let X be the number of ounces of water which would be a 0% solution.
0%28X%29%2B44%2824%29=20%28X%2B24%29
1056=20X%2B480
20X=576
X=28.8
You need to add 28.8 ounces of water.

Graphs/327171: You want to cover a backyard with decorative rock and plant some trees. You need 30 tons of rock to cover the area. If each ton costs $60 and each tree is $84, what is the maximum number of trees you can buy with a budget of $2,500? Write an inequality that illustrates the problem and solve. Express your answer as an inequality and explain how you arrived at your answer.

My question has two parts and is as follows:
Find and graph the solution set:
A. x^3 - 16x > 0
B. x^2 - 5x <= -6
I don't know how to solve these questions because they are raised to different powers, so I don't know how to solve for x.
Also, could you please explain to me how I'd go about graphing these inequalities?
Thank you so much.
