Money_Word_Problems/340424: The average of the salaries of Kelly, Renee and Nina is 20,000 a year. If Kelly earns 4000 less than Renee and Nina's salary is two-thirds of Renee's salary, find the salary of each person.
I've tried setting up as follows;
Let R = Renee
Let R - 4000 = Kelly
Let 2/3 * R = Nina
R + ( R - 4000 ) + 2/3 * R = 20,000
It's not working out for me though. Anyone have any thoughts? 1 solutions

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Convert the equation to slope-intercept form, where is the slope.

Perpendicular lines have slopes that are negative reciprocals.

The second line has the form,

Travel_Word_Problems/340417: Eric is piloting a hot air balloon and drifted 12 miles north,,9 miles west,22 miles south, 3 miles east, and 5 miles south. How many miles does Eric need to turn N,E,S,W to return back to his landing site? 1 solutions
Answer 243930 by Fombitz(13828) on 2010-09-08 13:53:08 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!Let North be positive y, South negative y.
Let East be positive x, West negative x.
Eric starts at (0,0).
12 miles N: (0,0)+(0,12)=(0,12)
9 miles W:(0,12)+(-9,0)=(-9,12)
22 miles S:(-9,12)+(0,-22)=(-9,-10)
3 miles E:(-9,-10)+(3,0)=(-6,-10)
5 miles S:(-6,-10)+(0,-5)=(-6,-15)
In otder to return to his starting point,
(-6,-15)+(X,Y)=(0,0)

X=6 miles East
Y=15 miles North

Graphs/340408: I cannot differentiate between different forms of interval writing. What is interval writing and how do I know which brackets to use or what number goes where when I write out an answer? For example, 0 < 5-2x. 1 solutions
Answer 243921 by Fombitz(13828) on 2010-09-08 13:36:06 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website! When the inequality does not include an "=" sign, then the solution will not contain the interval endpoint, so then you would use a set of parentheses.
.
.
.
Example:

So the interval includes all numbers less than but not .
In interval notation that would be,
( , )
.
.
.
When the inequality does contain an "=" sign, then the solution would include the interval endpoint, so then you would use a bracket.
.
.
.
Example:

In interval notation,
( , ]
.
.
.
And finally for a compound inequality,
Example:
The one side you already solved,

The other side is,

Putting those two together,
( , )
Then look at all of the variations with the different inequality signs,
 : ( , )
 : [ , )
 : [ , ]

First quadrant, , ,
Second quadrant, , ,
Third quadrant, , ,
Fourth quadrant, , ,
Also include the in the first and third quadrant and on the x and y axes.

Solve for
 and
That's two lines.

.
.
.
Pick points in each region and test the inequality.
Since the "=" sign is not included the regions are broken up into 8 regions not just 4 regions, so use the two lines and the two axes to demarcate each region.
In the first region, ,
False, this region is not in the solution region.
.
.
.
In the second region, ,

True, this region is part of the solution region.
.
.
.
