Equations/363077: Solve 3x-5(x-6)=2(10-x)
Here is my work, but I am not coming out with a correct answer.
3x - 5x + 30 = 20 - 2x
2x + 3x - 5x + 30 = 20
0x = -10

No, that's the correct answer.
0=-10
Since the solution leads to an inconsistency, there is no solution.
No value for x can make that above statement true.

Look for two numbers that add up to (-8) and whose product is (15).
If you look at the factors of 15 (15,1) (3,5).
If you add (-3) and (-5) you get (-8).

In addition, it's the additive inverse.
The number you add to another number to get zero.
Example: 3+ (-3)=0
So -3 is the additive inverse of 3.
.
.
.
In multipication, it's the multiplicative inverse.
The number you multiply another number by to get 1.
Example: 5*(1/5)=1
So (1/5) is the multiplicative inverse of 5.

In that sense, those two examples highlight "opposites".

Probability-and-statistics/363074: Hello, Can someone please check my work.
Essay; show all work. A simple dartboard has three areas… the main board has a radius of 10 inches, there is a circle with a radius of 5 inches, and the bullseye has a radius of 2 inches. What is the probability of a random dart landing inside the bullseye. Here is my Answer:
Find the Area of Bull’s-eye
A = pi *r^2 Start with the area of a circle formula.
A = pi*(2)^2 we plug in r=2
A = 3.14159*(2)^2 we replace pi with 3.14159 ( since pi is approximately 3.14159
A = 3.14159*(4) we square 2 to get 4
A=12.56636 we multiply 3.14159 and 4 to get 12.56636
So the area of the bull’s-eye with a radius of 2 units is roughly 12.56636 square units, the nearest thousandth.
Area of a whole board

A = pi * r^2 Start with the area of a circle formula.
A = pi * (15)^2 we plug in r=15
A = 3.14159*(15)^2 We replace pi with 3.14159 (since pi is approximately 3.14159)
A = 3.14159*(225) Square 15 to get 225.
A=706.85775 Multiply 3.14159 and 225 to get 706.85775
So the area of the circle with a radius of 15units is roughly 706.85775 square units.
CHANCE FOR A BULL'S EYE. 12.56636/706.85775 =0.017778 square units

Linear_Equations_And_Systems_Word_Problems/362889: Due to melting, an ice sculpture loses one-half its weight every hour. After 8 hours, it weighs 5/16 of a pound. How much did it weigh in the beginning.
I did 5/16+8 and put the fraction into decimal form then added the two together and got 8.3125. Then its says 1/2 of the that is lost in weight. Now I multiplied the 8.3125 to .05(The decimal of 1/2) then got 4.15625. I dont know if that is correct or what and i used samdep instead of pemdas its pemdas backwards because it says to solve backwards using asmdep.

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Make a graph with an x-axis labeled as years and y-axis labeled as population.
Make the limits whatever you think are reasonable.
The years (x-axis) must have 2010 on it and population must have 7000 on it.
Move to 2010 on the x-axis.
Move up from there to 7000 on the y-axis and mark the point.

By the rational roots theorem, if the equation has rational roots, they are of the form,
x=1%2F1 or x=-1%2F1
For x=1,
1%5E2%2B1-1=1%2B0=1 so that is not a solution.
For x=-1,
1%5E2-1-1=1-2=-1 so that is not a solution.
So there are no rational roots.

What's the question??

Systems-of-equations/362918: Please help me solve this problem by the elimination method. I am having a lot of trouble understanding how to solve for y after I solve for x. And I have a problem solving for x when a fraction is involved as is in this problem.
0.3x - 0.2y=4
0.4x - 0.5y=-55/17
I understand that the first equation will be 0.3x = 4, and the second will be 0.4x=-55/17;
Don't know what to do after this. I do not get the elimination method.
Thank you.

Answer 258783 by Fombitz(13828) About Me  on 2010-10-28 08:39:41 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!
1.0.3x+-+0.2y=4
2.0.4x+-+0.5y=-55%2F17
If you don't like fractions or decimals, get rid of them by multiplying.
Multiply both equations by 10 to get rid of decimals.
1.3x-2y=40
2.4x-5y=-550%2F17
Now multiply the second equation by 17 to get rid of the fraction.
2.68x-85y=-550
.
.
.
OK now you have 2 equations and you want to get rid of one variable.
1.3x-2y=40
2.68x-85y=-550
If you multiply the first equation by 85 and the second equation by (-2) and add them, you can eliminate y and solve for x.
85%283x-2y%29%2B%28-2%29%2868x-85y%29=85%2840%29%2B%28-2%29%28-550%29

119x=4500
highlight%28x=4500%2F119%29

Both equations will work.
