You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Let's do it step by step (x, then y, then z, then any constants)

I think that's as much as you can do.

Numbers_Word_Problems/155993: Two numbers have a product of 676 and a quotient of 4
1 solutions

Answer 114945 by Fombitz(13828) About Me  on 2008-09-10 08:30:06 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Call your numbers A and B.
1.AB=676
2.A%2FB=4
From eq. 2,
2.A%2FB=4
A=4B
Substitute that into eq. 1,
1.AB=676
%284B%29B=676
4B%5E2=676
B%5E2=169
B=13 or B=-13
From eq. 2,
A=4B
A=4%2813%29 or A=4%28-13%29
A=52 or A=-52
Two solutions,
(13,52) or (-13,-52).

Numbers_Word_Problems/156091: The sum of three consecutive integers is 279. Find the integers.
1 solutions

Answer 114941 by Fombitz(13828) About Me  on 2008-09-10 08:12:48 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Three consecutive integers would be N, N+1, and N+2.
N%2B%28N%2B1%29%2B%28N%2B2%29=279
3N%2B3=279
3N=276
N=92
So the three integers are 92,93, and 94.

Polynomials-and-rational-expressions/155827: can somebody please help me understand how to go about this question:
Find the term not involving y in the expansion of (1/y^3+y^2)^5. Please help!! Thank you.
1 solutions

Answer 114861 by Fombitz(13828) About Me  on 2008-09-09 16:43:30 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!
A general expansion would be,
%28a+%2B+b%29%5E5+=+a%5E5%2B5a%5E4b+%2B+10a%5E3b%5E2+%2B10a%5E2b%5E3+%2B5ab%5E4+%2B+b%5E5
Let a=y%5E-3 and b=y%5E2, the term not involving y will have y canceling out in the numerator and denominator.
a%5E2=y%5E-6
b%5E3=y%5E6
a%5E2b%5E3=y%5E-6%2Ay%5E6=y%5E%28-6%2B6%29=1
That's the third term of the expansion, 10a%5E2b%5E3=10%281%29=10.

Change your mixed numbers to fractions.
3 5/12=41/12
1 7/12=19/12
3 5/12 - 1 7/12 = 41/12-19/12
Same denominator, you can subtract.
3 5/12 - 1 7/12 = 41/12-19/12
3 5/12 - 1 7/12 = (41-19)/12
3 5/12 - 1 7/12 = 22/12
3 5/12 - 1 7/12 = (2*11)/(2*6)
3 5/12 - 1 7/12 = 11/6
3 5/12 - 1 7/12 = 1 5/6

The proper crutch length for someone who has sustained a leg injury and is x inches tall, is given by: y=0.72x+2 (where y is in inches)
a) What is the proper crutch length for someone who is 6 feet tall?
My answer was: y=0.72(6) + 2
= 4.32 + 2
Y= 6.32 if that the correct answer.
Can you help me solve b,c,& d.
b) If someone donates a crutch, which is 40 inches long, to a physical therapy clinic, what should be the height of the patient that the clinic who should receive it?
c) By how much does the length of the crutch increase or decrease for every increase of 1 inch in height of the patient?
d) Graph the equation for x ranging from 30 inches to 100 inches. Choose a suitable scale.

Watch your units.
It'd be tough for a 6 foot patient to use a 6 inch crutch.
You need to convert the height from feet to inches to use the formula.
6 feet=72 inches
y=0.72x%2B2
Let's change the equation to make it more meaningful
CH=0.72%28PH%29%2B2
where CH stands for crutch height (in inches) and PH, patient height (in inches).
a) PH=72
CH=0.72%28PH%29%2B2
CH=0.72%2872%29%2B2
CH=53.84
b)CH=40
CH=0.72%28PH%29%2B2
40=0.72%28PH%29%2B2
0.72%28PH%29=38
PH=52.78
c) For every inch of PH, CH changes by 0.72.
d) CH=0.72%28PH%29%2B2
At 30 inches,
CH=0.72%2830%29%2B2
CH=23.6
At 100 inches,
CH=0.72%28100%29%2B2
CH=74

You would perform a synthetic division of the two polynomials.
Similar to long division but the columns signify terms of degrees of x.
To get 5x^2, I would need to multiply (x+6) by 5x.
That would give me 5x^2+30x.
Subtract that from 5x^2+28x-10 would leave -2x-10.
to get -2x, I would need to multiply (x+6) by (-2)
That would give me -2x-12.
Subtract that from -2x-10 would leave 2.
I can't go any further.
Gather up all of the terms and the remainder.

1.%283%2F4%29x-%282%2F5%29y=2
2.%281%2F2%29x-%283%2F5%29y=-2
I'm not a big fan of fractions so I usually multiply both equations to get rid of denominators.
Multiply eq. 1 by 20 and eq. 2 by 10.
1.20%283%2F4%29x-20%282%2F5%29y=20%282%29

2.10%281%2F2%29x-10%283%2F5%29y=10%28-2%29
2.5x-6y=-20
Now use the elimination method to solve.
If I multiply eq. 2 by (-3) and add to eq. 1, I can get rid of x,
%2815x-8y%29%2B%28-3%29%285x-6y%29=40%2B%28-3%29%28-20%29
%2815x-8y%29%2B%28-15x%2B18y%29=40%2B60
10y=100
highlight%28y=10%29
Using eq. 1,

15x-8%2810%29=40
15x-80=40
15x=120
highlight%28x=8%29
.
.
.
Check the answer with the original equations.

%283%2F4%29%288%29-%282%2F5%29%2810%29=2

2=2
True.
