You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Solve by "substitution" means yo have to eliminate one of the variables (x or y) by substituting the other variable (y or x) into one of the two equations.
It's easier to demonstrate the process:
3+=+5x-3y%2B10
y+=+3x%2B4 Substitute this for y in the 1st equation.
3+=+5x-3%283x%2B4%29%2B10 Simplify and so;vefor x.
3+=+5x-9x-12%2B10
3+=+-4x-2 Add 4x to both sides.
4x%2B3+=+-2 Subtract 3 from both sides.
4x+=+-5 Divide both sides by 4.
x+=+-5%2F4 Now substitute this into either equation and solve for y.

Angles/158166: The ration of an angle to its supplement is 3:7. Find the ratio of the angle to its complement.

Answer 116542 by Earlsdon(6287) About Me  on 2008-09-21 13:04:30 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Let the angle be A, then its supplement would be 180-A. The problem description states that the ratio of these two is 3:7, so...
A%2F%28180-A%29+=+3%2F7 Cross multiply.
7A+=+3%28180-A%29 Simplify.
7A+=+540-3A Add 3A to both sides.
10A+=+540 Divide both sides by 10.
A+=+54degrees.
Now you are to show the ratio of the angle A to its complement.
The complement of angle A is 90-A, so the ratio is:
A%2F%2890-A%29+=+54%2F%2890-54%29 = 54%2F36+=+highlight%283%2F2%29

Angles/158108: Okay, I don't want the answer, I just want to know how to set up the problem. Or maybe if you can just reword the problem, it would be easier because I can set up equations, it's just that the problem is confusing.
Okay so this is what the problem states:
The measure of the supplement of an angle exceeds three times the measure of the complement by 30. Find the measure of the supplement.
I attempted this problem once but then it was too confusing so I just erased all of it. I just need help with understanding the problem.

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Let the angle be A, then its supplement would be 180-A and its complement would be 90-A. From the problem description...
The supplement of A (180-A) is 30 degrees more than three times its complement (90-A), and this can be expressed as:
180-A = 3(90-A)+30 Simplify and solve for A.
Once you have found A, you can then find its supplement, 180-A.
Good luck!

Answer 116470 by Earlsdon(6287) About Me  on 2008-09-20 18:12:09 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Well, there's nothing wrong with what you have dome so far!
The value of h can be found if your equation is in the "vertex" form: f%28x%29+=+a%28x-h%29%5E2%2Bk.
In this form, the vertex is located at (h, k), and since you already have the x-coordintate of the vertex (x = -2), then h = -2.
The problem states that you are to substitute the two integers to left and right of h into the funtion to find the corresponding y.
Since h = -2, then the two integers to the left of h would have to be -3 and -4 while the two integers to the right of h would have to be -1 and 0
So you substitute these integers, one-at-a-time into the function and solve for y.
Let's start with x = -4:
f%28-4%29+=+%28-4%29%5E2%2B4%28-4%29%2B1
f%28-4%29+=+16-16%2B1
f%28-4%29+=+1
Now x = -3:
f%28-3%29+=+%28-3%29%5E2%2B4%28-3%29%2B1
f%28-3%29+=+9-12%2B1
f%28-3%29+=+-2
You should be able to do the remaining ones yourself.
If you still have trouble, please re-post.

Linear-equations/158073: Can someone help me with this one.

Answer 116466 by Earlsdon(6287) About Me  on 2008-09-20 17:36:38 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!
To determine whether the graphs of the given equations are perpendicular lines, parallel lines, or neither, you need ony to compare their slopes.
Perpendicular lines have negative reciprocal slopes.
Parallel lines have equal slopes, and neither have neither!
So, let's get the equations into their "slope-intercept" forms: y=mx+b.
1) 3x-8y+=+-18 Add 8y to both sides.
3x+=+8y-18 Add 18 to both sides.
3x%2B18+=+8y Divide both sides by 8.
highlight%28y+=+%283%2F8%29x%2B9%2F4%29 The slope here is:highlight%28m%5B1%5D+=+3%2F8%29
2) 32x%2B12y+=+-18 Subtract 2x from both sides.
12y+=+-32x-18 Divide both sides by 12.
highlight%28y+=+%28-8%2F3%29x-9%2F6%29 The slope here is: highlight%28m%5B2%5D+=+-8%2F3%29
Comparing m%5B1%5D+=+3%2F8 with m%5B2%5D+=+-8%2F3, you can see that they are negative reciprocals and, therefore, their graphs of the equations will be perpendicular lines.
For confirmation, we'll graph the two equations. Red = equation 1). Green = equation 2).

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
1) Let the left page number be x, then the next consecutive right page number is x+1.
You are told that the sum of these two numbers is 469, so you can write the equation:
x+(x+1) = 469
2x+1 = 469 Subtract 1 from both sides.
2x = 468 Divide both sides by 2.
x = 234 and (x+1) = 235
The page numbers are: 234 and 235
2) The product of twice a number and 3 ((2n)*3) is the same as (=) the difference of 5 times the number and 3/4 (5n-3/4).
You can express this as:
(2n)*3 = 5n-3/4 Simplify.
6n = 5n-3/4 Subtract 5n from both sides.
n = -3/4
The number is -3/4
3) The sum of three consecutive integers is 99. This can be expressed as:
x+(x+1)+(x+2) = 99 Simplify.
3x+3 = 99 Subtract 3 from both sides.
3x = 96 Divide both sides by 3.
x = 32
The code for Belgium is 32.
The code for France is 33.
The code for Spain is 34

I'm assuming that you mean a "regular" polygon!
The measure of an interior angle, A, of a regular polygon of N sides is given by:
A+=+%28N-2%29180%2FN Substitute A = 120 degrees.
120+=+%28N-2%29180%2FN Multiply both sides by N.
120N+=+180N-360 Subtract 120N from both sides.
0+=+60N-360 Add 360 to both sides.
360+=+60N Finally, divide both sides by 60.
N+=+6
The regular polygon has 6 equal sides and is called a hexagon.

Remember...slope = rise over run.
Rise is 3 ft. and run is 24 ft, so slope = 3/24. Simplify to 1/8 and the decimal equaivalent is 0.125 which, changed to a percent = 12.5%
The grade is 12.5%

Let x = the price witout tip. Change 17% to its decimal equivalent of 0.17, so...
x+%2B+0.17x+=+230 Combine like-terms.
1.17x+=+230 Divide both sides by 1.17
x+=+196.58
The total amount excluding tip is: $196.58

%28x-3%29%28x%2B3%29%2F%28x%2B1%29+%3C=+0 Now multiply both sides by (x+1)
%28x-3%29%28x%2B3%29+%3C=+0 because 0%2A%28x%2B1%29+=+0
Finally:
x-3+%3C=+0 or x%2B3+%3C=+0 so...

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
You can do this without graphing by finding the slope of each equation.
Remember the "slope-intercept" form? y = mx+b where m is the slope.
Starting with the given equations, get them into the slope-intercept form so that you campare their slopes:
First equation:
2y+=+8x%2B4 To get y by itself, you divide both sides by 2.
y+=+4x%2B2 and you can see that the slope, m+=+4.
Second equation:
y+=+%28-1%2F4%29x as you can see, this is already in the slope-intercept form and the slope here is: m+=+%28-1%2F4%29
Ok, we have the two slopes...now what?
Well, we compare them!
Why, because we know (or should know) that if two lines are parallel, their slopes are equal, and if two lines are perpendicular, their slopes are negative reciprocals.
So what is the negative reciprocal of 4? Why, it's just %28-1%2F4%29.
So you can see that the slopes are negative reciprocals, therefore, the two lines are perpendicular!...and all this without graphing.

Miscellaneous_Word_Problems/156868: 4. A customer wants to make a teepee in his backyard for his children. He plans to use lengths of PVC plumbing pipe for the supports on the teepee, and he wants the teepee to be 12 feet across and 8 feet tall . How long should the pieces of PVC plumbing pipe be?

Answer 115662 by Earlsdon(6287) About Me  on 2008-09-14 15:19:49 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!
If you think in terms of a right triangle, you can "see" that the height of the triangle represents the height of the tepee (h = 8ft) and the base of the triangle is half the distance across the base of the tepee (12ft), so this would be 6 ft.
The PVC supports are represented by the hypotenuse of the right triangle, and we can call this c.
So, invoking the Pythagorean theorem:
c%5E2+=+a%5E2%2Bb%5E2 where: a is the height (8ft), b is the base (6ft) and c is the length of the PVC support.
c%5E2+=+8%5E2%2B6%5E2
c%5E2+=+64%2B36
c%5E2+=+100 Take the square root of both sides.
c+=+10 or c+=+-10 Discard the negative solution as length is a positive quabntity.
The PVC supports are 10 feet long.

Miscellaneous_Word_Problems/156875: If a ball is tossed in the air from a height of 6 feet with a velocity pf 32 feet per second, then its altitude at time t(seconds) can be described by the function A(t) = -16t2 + 32r + 6. Find the altitude of the ball at 2 seconds.

Answer 115660 by Earlsdon(6287) About Me  on 2008-09-14 15:07:07 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!
To find the altitude, A, when after two seconds (t=2), substitute t = 2 into the given equation and solve for the altitude, A.
A%28t%29+=+-16t%5E2%2B32t%2B6 Substitute t =2.
A%282%29+=+-16%282%29%5E2%2B32%282%29%2B6
A%282%29+-64%2B64%2B6 Simplify.
A%282%29+=+6
The altitude at 2 seconds is 6 feet, so the ball is on the way down and, at 2 seconds, it is at the same altitude as when it was initially tossed.

Answer 115646 by Earlsdon(6287) About Me  on 2008-09-14 13:08:40 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!
You graph "circles" by plotting two graphs as follows:
First, solve the given equation for y:
x%5E2%2B4y%5E2+=+1 Subtract x^2 from both sides.
4y%5E2+=+-x%5E2%2B1 Now divide both sides by 4.
y%5E2+=+%28-x%5E2%2B1%29%2F4 Finally, take the square root of both sides.
y+=+sqrt%28%28-x%5E2%2B1%29%2F2%29 or y+=+-sqrt%28%28-x%5E2%2B1%29%2F2%29
Now when you graph these two functions, you'll see half the "circle" above the x-axis and the other half "circle" below the x-axis.

Well, you can use the distance formula for this:
d = rt where d = distance traveled, r = rate (speed) of travel, and t = the time used in traveling, so...
d = 55t where t (time) is the variable and there is no constant or, to put it another way, the constant is zero.
