Miscellaneous_Word_Problems/214400: Four people buy a large pizza of (X) pieces. If they split it evenly, how many pieces will each eat?
My question to this is not the answer=x/4, but why can't it be 4/x? Why does it have to be a certain way. I am confused!!! Help ... 1 solutions
Answer 161938 by Earlsdon(6287) on 2009-09-17 11:35:23 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!Would you agree that if the pizza had been cut into 12 equal-sized pieces and then divided evenly among four people, that each person would get three pieces?
You get the answer to this by dividing the number of pieces (12) by the number of people (4):
If the number of pieces into which the pizza has been divided is not known (x) and there are four people sharing the pizza, then each person would get:
The number of pieces into which the pizza has been cut divided by the number of people sharing the pizza.

If you want to solve for x, then you have to make an equation out this expression by setting it equal to something.
For example, you could solve for x if you set the expression equal to zero, say.
 Group the x-terms as shown:

Mixture_Word_Problems/214314: I am having a hard time trying to figure this problem out. It would be greatly appreciated if you could assist me. This question is from a work book not the text book:
Brass is an alloy made up of copper and zinc in varying proportions. How much brass containing 75.5% copper must be combined with a different brass containing 86.3% copper to make 5250kg of brass containing 80.0% copper
Thanks so much, 1 solutions
Answer 161882 by Earlsdon(6287) on 2009-09-16 22:27:01 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website! One way to approach these kinds of problems is to write down the amounts of copper (Cu) there are in the different brass alloys. Let x = the amount of the brass with 75.5% Cu.
The amount of amount of Cu in x kgs of this alloy can be expressed as:
 kg of Cu.
The amount of Cu in the other 86.3% Cu-brass alloy can be expressed as:
 kg. of Cu.
The sum of these two amounts is to equal 5250 kg of 80% Cu-brass.
So we can write the equation to find x.
 Simplify and solve for x.
 Subtract 4530.75 from both sides.
 Divide both sides by -0.108
kg of the brass with 75.5% Cu.

Linear-equations/214303: I have a homework assignment and I need an example of one so I can answer the rest of the questions. Find the line passing through the following pairs of points?
(3, 11) (6, 20)
Can you please show me how to figure these kind of questions out. Thanks
1 solutions
Answer 161871 by Earlsdon(6287) on 2009-09-16 21:43:45 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!Find the equation of the line that passes through the two points (3,11) and (6,20)
Since you don't specify the form of equation you need, I'll assume that the "slope-intercept" form (y = mx+b) is acceptable.
Start by finding the slope (m) of the line using the two given points.
where: , , , and Making the appropriate substitutions, we get:

So you can start out with:
To find the value of b, the y-intercept, substitute the x- and y-coordinates of either one of the two given points. Using the first point (3,11) we have:
 Subtract 9 from both sides.

The final equation is:

Length-and-distance/214110: In Japan, to get on a train you are not allowed to have an object over the length of 36 inches. How did a man get on a train with a ceremonial sword of 42 inches long? 1 solutions
Answer 161717 by Earlsdon(6287) on 2009-09-16 11:53:09 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website! The man could package the 42-inch sword in a flat box whose dimensions are:
h = 36 inches, w = 22 inches, and depth of, say, 2 inches.
Why would this work?
Let's say that sword is placed in the flat box so that it lies along the diagonal of the box.
So with a diagonal of 42 inches, a height of 36 inches, and a width of 22 inches, we can see, from the Pythagorean theorem, that the sword would fit inside the box and the box would not exceed 36 inches in length.
c = the diagonal (length of the sword), a = 36 (the length of the box) and b = 22 (the width of the box).

The actual width of the box really need be only 21.6 inches but I rounded up the nearest inch.

Find the x and y intercept for 2x - y = 5
1 solutions
Answer 161714 by Earlsdon(6287) on 2009-09-16 11:34:41 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!Find the x- and y-intercepts for:

The way to find th x-intercept is to set y=0 and solve for x.
Similarly, the way to find the y-intercept is to set x=0 and solve for y.
 Set x=0.
 Multiply both sides by -1.

The y-intercept is at (0, -5).
 Set y=o.
 Divide both sides by 2.

The x-intercept is at (5/2, 0)
Confirm this on the graph of this equation:

If Sue can fill a swimming pool in 30 mins., Paul can fill it in 45 mins. and Bob can fill the pool in 1hr.30 mins., How long would it take them to fill the pool if they all worked together? 1 solutions
Answer 161255 by Earlsdon(6287) on 2009-09-14 11:09:25 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website! You can start this problem by finding the rate (how much can be done in one minute) for each of the participants.
If Sue can fill the pool in 30 minutes, then she can fill of the pool in 1 minute.
If Paul can fill the pool in 45 minutes, then he can fill of the pool in 1 minute.
If Bob can fill the pool in 90 minutes, then he can fill of the pool in 1 minutes.
So in 1 minute, working together, they can fill:
 = of the pool.
If they can fill of the pool in 1 minute, then it will take them 15 minutes to fill the entire pool.
