Answer 5347 by DWL(56) About Me  on 2005-09-07 11:55:35 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!
The volume of a cylinder is pi%2AR%5E2%2AH
where pi+=+3.1415926
R= the radius
H = Height.
Pi is a constant.
R = 1/2 of the diameter = 8 / 2 = 4 cm
H = 3 cm
So 3.14%2A4%5E2%2A3= 150.72
answer = 150.72

Numbers_Word_Problems/9923: Mount Everest is the tallest mountain in the world. It is 237 meters higher than K2, the second tallest mountain. If the sum of their heights is 17,459 meters, how tall is each mountain?
1 solutions

Answer 5346 by DWL(56) About Me  on 2005-09-07 11:36:56 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Ok....
Mount Everest = E
Let K2 = K
E = K + 237
Sum of both mountains is a total height of 17459
Our eqauation is E + K = 17459
So we subtitue E with (K + 237)
so our eqaution now looks like this: %28K%2B237%29%2BK=17459
Let solve for K
Lets combine Terms on the left side of the equation 2K%2B237=17459
Now Subtract 237 from both sides 2K%2B237-237=17459-237 = 2K=17222
Sow we divide both side by 2 2K%2F2=17222%2F2 = K=8611
So we now know K2's height is 8,611 Meters
So Mount Everest = 8,611 + 237 = 8,848 Meters
Check 8,611 + 8,848 = 17,459

Age_Word_Problems/9726: A is elder to B by two years.A's father F is ttwice as old as A and B is twice as old as his sister S.If the ages of the father and sister differ by forty years.Find the age of A.

Answer 5255 by DWL(56) About Me  on 2005-09-05 22:48:20 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Ok..
We start with B, B = 2*S
A = 2+2*S
F= 2(2+2*S)
S= 2(2+2*S)-40
We now have the formula for all the ages.
Lets solve for S
s=2%282%2B2%2AS%29-40
Now we distribute
s=4%2B4S-40
Now we combine Terms
S=4S-36
Add 36 to each side:
S%2B36=4S-36%2B36 = S%2B36=4S
Lets subtract s from each side to get S-S%2B36=4S-S = 36=3S
Now lets divide each side by 3: %2836%2F3%29=%283S%2F3%29 = 12=S
So now we Know the Age of the Sister (s) = 12
so we know A = 2 + 2S, so we substitute in the 12 to get 2 + 2*12 = 2 + 24 = 26
so we know A's age is 26
B = 2*S = 2*12=24 So B's Ages is 24
F = 2(2+2*S) = 2(2+2*12) = 4+48 = 52
Check:
A is elder to B by two years, yes A=26, B=24
A's father F is twice as old as A, yes A=26 F=52
B is twice as old as his sister S, yes B=24 S=12
father and sister differ by forty years, yes S=12 F=52

Miscellaneous_Word_Problems/9616: If a 17-ft. ladder is leaning against a building. The base of the ladder is 7 feet from the base of the building. How high up the side of the building is the top of the ladder?
1 solutions

Answer 5229 by DWL(56) About Me  on 2005-09-05 08:15:14 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!
This is a right triangle problem so we can use the Pythagorean Theorem that says: A%5E2%2BB%5E2=C%5E2
We know the ladder is 17 Ft. Tall and leaning against the wall and the bottom of the ladder is 7 Ft out from the wall.
So we will make the height of the wall where the top of the ladder is = A
The distance (7 Ft.) from the wall out to the bottom of the ladder = B
and the length of the ladder (17 Ft.) = C
So A & B are legs on the right Triangle and C is the hypotenuse of the Triangle.
Now we can solve the problem.
We now put the numbers in for the variables we know and the equation looks like this: A%5E2%2B7%5E2=17%5E2
Now we solve the equation, lets isolate A^2 by subtracting 7^2 from both sides:
A%5E2%2B7%5E2-7%5E2=17%5E2-7%5E2 so this becomes A%5E2=17%5E2-7%5E2
Now lets sqaure our numbers so: A%5E2=289-49 or A%5E2=240
Now lets lets get rid of the square on the A by taking the square root of both sides so: sqrt%28A%5E2%29=sqrt%28240%29 = A=15.49
Now we know the ladder is 15.49 Ft. up the side of the building.
Lets check it with our formula A%5E2%2BB%5E2=C%5E2
15.49%5E2%2B7%5E2=17%5E2 = 239.94%2B49=289 = 288.94=289 We will round up to 289. Close enough for goverment work.

Linear-equations/9517: In a mixture of concrete, there are 3 lb of cement mix for each pound of gravel. If the mixture contains a total of 140 lbs of these two ingredients, how many pounds of gravel are there?
1 solutions

Answer 5206 by DWL(56) About Me  on 2005-09-04 12:22:33 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Let:
x = Cement
y = Gravel
x + y =140
We also know that the cement is 3 times as much as the gravel, so:
x = 3y
So now substitute in the equation x + y = 140 and it becomes: 3y%2By=140
Combine Terms
4y=140
Divide both sides by 4
y=35
so the Gravel weighs 35 pounds. We know there is 3 pounds of cement for every pound of gravel, so"
3%2A35=105
so the cement = 105.
Answer"
35 Lbs. of Gravel
105 Lbs. of Cement

This is a permutation and combination problem. I'll Give you the answer, but you need to read about these two subjects.
Permutation Part
Now we have 10 players and want to make groupings of 5 people. It's harder to list all those permutations. To find the number of five-people permutations that we can make from 10 people without repeated (10_P_5), we'd like to have a formula because there are 30,240 such permutations and we don't want to write them all out!

For five-people permutations, there are 10 possibilities for the first person, 9 for the second, 8 for the third, and 7 for the fourth, and 6 for the last person. We can find the total number of different five-people permutations by multiplying 10 x 9 x 8 x 7 x 6 = 30,240. This is part of a factorial
To arrive at 10 x 9 x 8 x 7 x 6, we need to divide 10 factorial (10 because there are ten objects) by (10-5) factorial (subtracting from the total number of objects from which we're choosing the number of objects in each permutation). You can see below that we can divide the numerator by 5 x 4 x 3 x 2 x 1:
10_P_5 = 10%21%2F%2810-5%29 = 10%21%2F5%21 = %2810%2A9%2A8%2A7%2A6%2A5%2A4%2A3%2A2%2A1%29%2F%285%2A4%2A3%2A2%2A1%29 = %2810%2A9%2A8%2A7%2A6%29=+30240

Combination Part
we have 10 people from which we wish to choose 5 and we want to find the number of combinations of size 5 without repeated people that can be made from the ten people. To calculate 10_C_5, which is 120, we don't want to have to write all the combinations out!
Since we already know that 10_P_5 = 30,240, we can use this information to find 10_C_5. Let's think about how we got that answer of 30240. We found all the possible combinations of 5 that can be taken from 10 (10_C_5). Then we found all the ways that five people in those groups of size 5 can be arranged: 5 x 4 x 3 x 2 x 1 = 5! = 120. Thus the total number of permutations of size 5 taken from a set of size 10 is equal to 5! times the total number of combinations of size 5 taken from a set of size 10: 10_P_5 = 5! x 10_C_5.
When we divide both sides of this equation by 5! we see that the total number of combinations of size 5 taken from a set of size 10 is equal to the number of permutations of size 5 taken from a set of size 10 divided by 5!. This makes it possible to write a formula for finding 10_C_5:
10_C_5 = %2810_P_5%29%2F5%21 = 10%21%2F5%21%2A5%21 = 10%21%2F5%21%2810-5%21%29 = = %2810%2A9%2A8%2A7%2A6%29%2F%285%2A4%2A3%2A2%2A1%29 = 30240%2F120=252

So the answer is:
You can have 252 starting teams of five from a group of 10 players.

Solving linear inequalities is very similar to solving linear equations, except for one detail: you flip the inequality sign whenever you multiply or divide the inequality by a negative.
3x-2%3C=-5
3x%3C=-3
x%3C=-1
x-1%3E=0
x%3E=1
Neither of these examples required us to flip the inequality sign. Remeber, you flip the inequality sign whenever you multiply or divide the inequality by a negative.

Standard form is scientific notation, using the base of 10.
so your problem is (6 *.1) + (5 *.001) + (7 * .0001) = .6057
We rewrite it in Standard form as 6057%2A10%5E-4
Which means we moved the decimal 4 places to the right.
we could also have written it 6.057%2A10%5E-1
Which means we only moves the decimal 1 place to the right.

This problem is a trigonometry problem using triangles:
It involves the use of Pythagorean Theorem, which says: "In algebraic
terms, a%5E2%2Bb%5E2=c%5E2 where c is the hypotenuse while a and b are the
sides of the triangle.
Think of the basball diamond as a square, and at each base a corner of
the square with each corner being a 90 degree angle. So if we draw a
line from third base to first base we cut the square in half.
We now have two right triangles.
The first leg of the triangle is from first base to second base, the
second leg of the triangle is from second base to third base and the
distance from third base across the field to first base is the hypotenuse.
we can now solve this problem.
Distance from First to Second = 90 Ft., we will call this A
Distance from Second to Third = 90 Ft., We will call this B
Throwing distance from third to First = ?, We will call this C
So we know that A%5E2%2BB%5E2=C%5E2
So we subsitute the numbers we know:
90%5E2%2B90%5E2=C%5E2
So squaring the numbers we get: 8100%2B8100=C%5E2
We then take the square root of both sides to get
sqrt%288100%2B8100%29=C%29
sqrt%2816200%29=C
127.28 = C

Mr. Merrill has 3 times as many nickels as dimes. The coins have a total value of $1.50. How many of each coin does he have? (I know the answer is 18 nickels and 6 dimes but it comes from experience of handling change in a store and I don't know how to arrive at a formula or equation.)

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Let X = dimes
Let Y = Nickels
We know Y = 3X
We also know that .10 = Dimes and .05 = Nickles
So X+Y=1.50
We substitue the following:
.10X + 3(.05X)=1.50
.10X + .15X = 1.50
.25X = 1.50
Divide both sides by .25
X = 6 Dimes
So we know we have 3 times as many nickels as dimes, 6 x 3 = 18.
Answer:
6 dimes = .60
18 Nickels = .90
Total = 1.50

Polynomials-and-rational-expressions/9343: Sorry but I typed an error in the formula before. I am not sure this matters or not. I previously posted it as follows: x^2 + 3x - 10 + 0.
It should be = 0 not + 0 So here it is again.

Choose the correct solutions for the quadratic equation x^2 + 3x - 10 = 0.
I believe the answer to this one is (-5, 2)
Thank You

Money_Word_Problems/9290: A total of $20,000 is to be invested. Some in bonds and some in CD's. The amount in bonds is to exceed that in CD's by $3,000. How much will be invested in each?
It has been 18 years since I have done algebra problems, and I am having a little bit of difficulty. The book shows an example, but it is in a fraction form, this isn't and it is confusing me. Any help you can give me would be appreciated. Thank you

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Ok We will call the bonds X and the CD's Y
We know that X + Y = 20,000
we also know that X = Y + 3,000
so lets solve the equation:
Y + 3000 + Y = 20,000
Combine terms:
2*Y+3,000=20,000
Subtract 3000 from both sides results: 2*Y=17000
Divide both sides by 2 results: Y = 8,500
so if Y = 8,500, we know X = Y + 3000, so X = 8500 + 3000 = 11,500
So bonds = 11,500
And CDs = 8,500
For a total of 20,000
