Solved by pluggable solver: SOLVE quadratic equation (work shown, graph etc)
Quadratic equation ax%5E2%2Bbx%2Bc=0 (in our case 1x%5E2%2B1x%2B1+=+0) has the following solutons:

x%5B12%5D+=+%28b%2B-sqrt%28+b%5E2-4ac+%29%29%2F2%5Ca

For these solutions to exist, the discriminant b%5E2-4ac should not be a negative number.

First, we need to compute the discriminant b%5E2-4ac: b%5E2-4ac=%281%29%5E2-4%2A1%2A1=-3.

The discriminant -3 is less than zero. That means that there are no solutions among real numbers.

If you are a student of advanced school algebra and are aware about imaginary numbers, read on.

In the field of imaginary numbers, the square root of -3 is + or - sqrt%28+3%29+=+1.73205080756888.

An airplane travels 1800km in 6 hours flying with the wind. It travels only two thirds as far in the same time against the wind. Find the speed of the wind.
-----------
1800 km/6 hr = 300 km/hr
2/3 of that = 200 km/hr
-----------
wind speed = 1/2 the difference = 50 km/hr

The slope is the same (2/3), so they're parallel.
The y-intercepts are different, (+4 and -1) so they're not coincident or dependent.

Where does the -16 come from in the vertical motion equation?
----------
Earth's gravitational acceleration is apx 32.16 ft/sec/sec, 32 is often used.
16 is 1/2 of that, in the equation s = at^2/2 = 16t^2
It's negative because it's downward.
--> -16t^2

-----------------
3000/450 = 6 2/3 hour
= 6 hours 40 minutes after takeoff, unless they stop to refuel before that.
Planes that slow seldom have 6 hours of endurance.

The average of the measures of 4 interior angles of a pentagon is 110 degrees. I then need to find out the measure of the fifth interior angle. How do I find out what the four interior angles averaged to 110 degrees are?
-------------
4 angles with an average of 110 total 440 degs.
That leaves 100 degs for the 5th angle.
-----
It's not possible to determine the 4 individual angles.

Ryan left the science museum and drove south. Gabriella left three hours later drving 42 km/h faster in an effort to catch up to him. After two hours Gabriella finally caught up. Find Ryan's average speed.
-----------
Ryan's speed = r
In 3 hours, he's 3r miles away.
G caught up to him in 2 hours at 42 km/hr wrt Ryan --> he was 84 km ahead.
3r = 84
r = 28 km/hr
