Write all of the following statement(s) that apply to the following polynomial: -8x + 2x^2 – 3
It is a binomial. ******************* It's a trinomial, it has 3 terms.
It can be evaluated at x = -1/3 **** That's true, but it can be evaluated for x = any number.
---------------
It has a coefficient of 8. **** It also has other coefficients.
It is quadratic.
----------------
There are other things that can be said. "Write all..." is not a reasonable request.

Quadratic equation ax%5E2%2Bbx%2Bc=0 (in our case 1x%5E2%2B-6x%2B36+=+0) has the following solutons:

x%5B12%5D+=+%28b%2B-sqrt%28+b%5E2-4ac+%29%29%2F2%5Ca

For these solutions to exist, the discriminant b%5E2-4ac should not be a negative number.

First, we need to compute the discriminant b%5E2-4ac: b%5E2-4ac=%28-6%29%5E2-4%2A1%2A36=-108.

The discriminant -108 is less than zero. That means that there are no solutions among real numbers.

How many grams of coal tar should be added to the product to obtain an ointment containing 15% coal tar? The right answer 16.5g. But I cannot solve it. I know 100% is mixed.
-------------------
If the 5% and the 10% are mixed:
--> 2000 gm of p%
2000*p = 800*5 + 1200*10 = 16000
p = 8%
---------
Add 100% to get some amount of 10%
x*100 + 8*2000 = (x + 2000)*15
100x + 16000 = 15x + 30000
85x = 14000
x =~ 164.7 grams

One radius of a circle has endpoints D(2,4) and E(-1,2).
a)Find a possible endpoint for the diameter that contains this radius.
------------
Find the x & y differences separately
dx = 3, dy = 2
=========
Add the differences to D and subtract from E
D --> F(5,6)
E --> G(-4,0)
F & G are the 2 possible points on the diameter.
-----------------
b) Explain why there are two possible answers in part a)
Either point, D or E, could be the center.

If You deposit money into an account that pays 4.5% annual interest. If the account is compounded YEARLY, how long will it take for you account to double in value? If the account is compounded CONTINUOUSLY, how long will it take for the account to double in value?
-----------
Yearly:
2*Amt = Amt*(1.045)^n
1.045^n = 2
n*log(1.045) = log(2)
n = log(2)/log(1.045)
n =~ 15.747 years

Continuous:
2 = e^(rn) = e^0.045n
ln(2) = 0.045n
n = ln(2)/0.045
n =~ 15.403 years

Answer 377690 by Alan3354(30993) About Me  on 2012-04-08 09:27:02 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Twice the first number is increased by the second number is 16. Find the two numbers if the sum of their squares is a minimum.
-------------
2x + y = 16
x^2 + y^2 = s
----------
y = 16 - 2x
x^2 + (16-2x)^2 = s
x^2 + 4x^2 - 64x + 256 = s
5x^2 - 64x + 256 = s
-------
That's a parabola. Since the coefficient of the x^2 term is +, it opens upward and has a minumum. The minimum is the vertex.
The vertex is on the LOS (Line of Symmetry).
The equation for the line of symmetry is x = -b/2a
x = 64/10 = 6.4
-------
2x + y = 16
--> y = 3.2
-----------
The answer is 6.4 & 3.2

---------------
The max area of a rectangle with one side fixed is having the long side 2x the short sides. That would be 75 by 150 in this case.

Since the house is less than 150 ft, that will be one dimension of the rectangle.
