------------
Avg speed = 2*50*100/(50+100)
= 200/3 km/hr
--------------
Or, she went 30 km in 27 minutes
r = d/t = 30/27 km/min
= 200/3 km/hr

Find the slope, x-intercept, and y-intercept of line.
y=-4x-+1
----------
It's in slope-intercept form, y = mx + b
m = slope = -4
b = y-intercept = -1 (I think -+1 = -1)
------------
At the x-intercept, y = 0
0 = -4x - 1
x = -1/4

Numeric_Fractions/647647: Thanks for your reply to my comment about the solution to problem 14557 (ref 647484) but the reply substantiates my claim that the ANSWER given shows the n to be in the denominator and perhaps I was not as lucid in my comment that it didn't emphasize the point. Hopefully, a student will have the opportunity to put both answers (14557 and 647484) together and recognize the truth as given in answer 647484 and understand fully the differences. (It is pretty obvious.)

Exponents/647566: I have several problems like this one: -4x^(-3)y^(4)/-24x^(-3)y^(-3)

First I take a -4 out of the coefficients. Then I cancel out the x^(-3). I don't know what to do with the y.
I know I'm going about it the wrong way, but I can't figure out how to do this correctly. Could you please show me how to solve this step-by-step?
Thank you.

Find the center and radius of each circle.
#1 (x+2)^2+y^2=16
It's %28x-h%29%5E2+%2B+%28y-k%29%5E2+=+r%5E2
so h = -2, k = 0, r = 4
--> %28x-2%29%5E2+%2B+y%5E2+=+4%5E2
Center @ (-2,0), r = 4
============================
Do these the same way.
#2 (x-1/2)^2+(y-1/2)^2=25
#3 (x-5)^2+y^2=68

Solved by pluggable solver: SOLVE quadratic equation (work shown, graph etc)
Quadratic equation ax%5E2%2Bbx%2Bc=0 (in our case 3x%5E2%2B6x%2B1+=+0) has the following solutons:

x%5B12%5D+=+%28b%2B-sqrt%28+b%5E2-4ac+%29%29%2F2%5Ca

For these solutions to exist, the discriminant b%5E2-4ac should not be a negative number.

First, we need to compute the discriminant b%5E2-4ac: b%5E2-4ac=%286%29%5E2-4%2A3%2A1=24.

Discriminant d=24 is greater than zero. That means that there are two solutions: +x%5B12%5D+=+%28-6%2B-sqrt%28+24+%29%29%2F2%5Ca.

x%5B1%5D+=+%28-%286%29%2Bsqrt%28+24+%29%29%2F2%5C3+=+-0.183503419072274
x%5B2%5D+=+%28-%286%29-sqrt%28+24+%29%29%2F2%5C3+=+-1.81649658092773

Quadratic expression 3x%5E2%2B6x%2B1 can be factored:
3x%5E2%2B6x%2B1+=+%28x--0.183503419072274%29%2A%28x--1.81649658092773%29
Again, the answer is: -0.183503419072274, -1.81649658092773. Here's your graph:
graph%28+500%2C+500%2C+-10%2C+10%2C+-20%2C+20%2C+3%2Ax%5E2%2B6%2Ax%2B1+%29

=================
n = -1 ± sqrt(6)/3
Maybe you didn't reduce it.

----------------
300% more = 4 times the area.
Area is a function of r^2, so r = 2 times.

Volume is a function of r^3 --> B has 8 times the volume of A
A's volume is 7/8 less than B's --> 87.5% less volume
k = 87.5

-----------
one pipe can fill a tank in 30 min.
Adds 1/30 of a tank per minute.
----------------
while another pipe can fill it in 40 min.
Adds 1/40 of a tank per minute.
----------------
A third pipe can empty the same tank in 20 min
Subtracts 1/20 of a tank per minute.
====================
Each minute, 1/30 + 1/40 - 1/20 of the tank
= 4/120 + 3/120 - 6/120 = 1/120
--> 120 minutes
