 Probability-and-statistics/257266: Scientific Notation Very large and very small numbers are easier to write in scientific notation. For example, the number, 2360000 would be written 2.36 106 in scientific notation. How would you enter this number in WebAssign using scientific notation to 3 significant figures? 1 solutions Answer 189191 by Alan3354(31537)   on 2010-01-15 11:52:21 (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website! 2360000 would be written 2.36 106 ----------- 236 106 might be interpreted as 236106, or 236,106. You need to clarify that the 6 is an exponent. Use 2.36*10^6, or 2.36E6 ---------- 2.36 is 3 sig figs

 Linear-equations/257270: what is the slope and y intercept of 6-1/3=7x?1 solutions Answer 189189 by Alan3354(31537)   on 2010-01-15 11:48:21 (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!what is the slope and y intercept of 6-1/3=7x? --------- 6-1/3=7x 7x = 17/3 x = 17/21 ---------- This is a "vertical" line thru (17/21,0). Its slope is infinite, or undefined. There is no y-intercept, it's parallel to the y-axis.
 Linear-equations/257231: If the line that passes through the points A(2,-1) and B(3,-2) is parallel to the line ax – by + c = 0, then determine the value of a^2 – b^2.1 solutions Answer 189184 by Alan3354(31537)   on 2010-01-15 11:31:02 (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!If the line that passes through the points A(2,-1) and B(3,-2) is parallel to the line ax – by + c = 0, then determine the value of a^2 – b^2. ------------------ The line thru the points is y = -x + 1, or x + y - 1 = 0 Its slope, m = -1, and the slope of ax - by + c is also -1 --> a/b = -1. a = -b a^2 - b^2 = 0
 Graphs/257242: graph the linear function by plotting x and y intercepts 4x-12y=241 solutions Answer 189180 by Alan3354(31537)   on 2010-01-15 11:25:14 (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website! graph the linear function by plotting x and y intercepts 4x-12y=24 x-3y = 6 --------- x=0 --> y-intecept x = 0, y = -2 --> (0,-2) -------------------------- y=0 --> x-intercept y = 0, x = 6 --> (6,0) ---------------------- Plot the 2 points and draw a straight line thru them.

 Miscellaneous_Word_Problems/257210: The difference of the squares of two prime numbers is 10197. What is the sum of the squares of the two numbers?1 solutions Answer 189157 by Alan3354(31537)   on 2010-01-15 10:27:53 (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!The difference of the squares of two prime numbers is 10197. What is the sum of the squares of the two numbers? ------------- Since the difference is an odd number, one of the prime numbers has to be an even number. The only even prime is 2, and its square is 4. 10197 + 4 = 10201 = 101^2 The numbers are 2 and 101. --------------------- The sum of their squares is 10205. ----------------- PS -2 and -101 also work.
Quadratic_Equations/257229: This has been asked before and Stan was the one who responded. I can see where he was going, but I don't like to just take an answer, I like to figure it out, too and see where I go. I am not getting the same answer, so I was wondering if someone can tell me where I am going wrong. Here is what I have been doing:
PROBLEM:
Suppose you are an event coordinator for a large performance theater. One of the hottest new Broadway musicals has started to tour, and your city is the first stop on the tour. You need to supply information about projected ticket sales to the box office manager. The box office manager uses this information to anticipate staffing needs until the tickets sell out. You provide the manager with a quadratic equation that models the expected number of ticket sales for each day x. ( is the day tickets go on sale).

And when it comes to figuring out the last day of sales, I do this:
- .2x^2+12x+11
a= -.2 b= 12 c= 11
x= -(-.2)+- sqrt(12^2-4*(-.2)*11/2*(-.2)
x= .2 +- sqrt(144-(-.8)*11/-.4
x= .2 +- sqrt(144-(-8.8)/-.4
x= .2 +- sqrt(152.8)/-.4
And this is where I get lost.....I am getting decimals out the rear and can't figure out what I am doing wrong. Does this even look close??? I would really, really appreciate any help.... I'm about to give up... It's been 2 days working on this stupid problem. Ugh!!

 Solved by pluggable solver: SOLVE quadratic equation (work shown, graph etc) Quadratic equation (in our case ) has the following solutons: For these solutions to exist, the discriminant should not be a negative number. First, we need to compute the discriminant : . Discriminant d=152.8 is greater than zero. That means that there are two solutions: . Quadratic expression can be factored: Again, the answer is: -0.903074280724887, 60.9030742807249. Here's your graph:
