Linear-equations/257554: 4. The line y=0.15x+0.79

represents an estimate of the average cost of gasoline for each year. The line
0.11x-y=-0.85

estimates the price of gasoline in January of each year (Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2006).
a) Do you expect the lines to be intersecting, parallel, or perpendicular? Explain your reasoning.
b) Use the equations of the lines to determine if they are parallel. What did you find?
c) Did your answer to part b confirm your expectation in part a?

------------------
The line 0.11x-y=-0.85
estimates the price of gasoline in January of each year
--------------------
a) Do you expect the lines to be intersecting, parallel, or perpendicular? Explain your reasoning.
They will intersect, because the slopes are different.
----------------------
b) Use the equations of the lines to determine if they are parallel. What did you find?
They're not, the slopes are different.
-------------------
c) Did your answer to part b confirm your expectation in part a?
Yes

If the trains start 100 miles away from each other, how far will the fly travel before it is squashed by the collision?
-----------------------
The trains approach each other at 110 mph (50 + 60)
It takes the trains 100/110 hours to meet.
The fly flies at 100 mph for 100/110 hours.
The fly's distance = 100*(100/110) miles
d =~ 90.91 miles

previous day. Determine how many peanut butter cups he ate on the first day.
------------
The 5 numbers total 100.
The average is 20, so that's the middle number.
--> 8, 14, 20, 26, 32

z^2-12z+32/z^2+z-20
Factor the NUM and DEN
= (z-8)*(z-4)/(z+5)*(z-4)
Both NUM and DEN have (z-4), so cancel them.
= (z-8)/(z+5)
-------------
I don't know what "factors of one" means. Dividing by one doesn't change anything.

Solved by pluggable solver: SOLVE quadratic equation (work shown, graph etc)
Quadratic equation ax%5E2%2Bbx%2Bc=0 (in our case 1x%5E2%2B2x%2B-6+=+0) has the following solutons:

x%5B12%5D+=+%28b%2B-sqrt%28+b%5E2-4ac+%29%29%2F2%5Ca

For these solutions to exist, the discriminant b%5E2-4ac should not be a negative number.

First, we need to compute the discriminant b%5E2-4ac: b%5E2-4ac=%282%29%5E2-4%2A1%2A-6=28.

Discriminant d=28 is greater than zero. That means that there are two solutions: +x%5B12%5D+=+%28-2%2B-sqrt%28+28+%29%29%2F2%5Ca.

x%5B1%5D+=+%28-%282%29%2Bsqrt%28+28+%29%29%2F2%5C1+=+1.64575131106459
x%5B2%5D+=+%28-%282%29-sqrt%28+28+%29%29%2F2%5C1+=+-3.64575131106459

Quadratic expression 1x%5E2%2B2x%2B-6 can be factored:
1x%5E2%2B2x%2B-6+=+%28x-1.64575131106459%29%2A%28x--3.64575131106459%29
Again, the answer is: 1.64575131106459, -3.64575131106459. Here's your graph:
graph%28+500%2C+500%2C+-10%2C+10%2C+-20%2C+20%2C+1%2Ax%5E2%2B2%2Ax%2B-6+%29

----------
x = -1 ± sqrt(7)
--------------
3) 2x^2+3x-5=0
do these like the ones above. If you can't factor them, use the quadratic equation. It always works.
-------------------
4) 2x^2+7x+6=0
4) x^2-4x+5=0
5) x^2-10x+28=0

236 106 might be interpreted as 236106, or 236,106.

what is the slope and y intercept of 6-1/3=7x?
---------
6-1/3=7x
7x = 17/3
x = 17/21

This is a "vertical" line thru (17/21,0). Its slope is infinite, or undefined. There is no y-intercept, it's parallel to the y-axis.

If the line that passes through the points A(2,-1) and B(3,-2) is parallel to the line ax – by + c = 0, then determine the value of a^2 – b^2.
------------------
The line thru the points is y = -x + 1, or
x + y - 1 = 0
Its slope, m = -1, and the slope of ax - by + c is also -1 --> a/b = -1.
a = -b
a^2 - b^2 = 0
