Square-cubic-other-roots/264922: hello,
i already did this problem but i feel like its wrong
so can you please check it for me??
here it is:
2 squareroot(25/16)
my answer was: 5/4
i also had another question:
i dont no how to solve square roots with letters instead of numbers
for example:
square root(a^2/b^5)
your help is appreciated
THANK YOU!!!!

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
2 squareroot(25/16)
my answer was: 5/4
2%2Asqrt%2825%2F16%29
= 2*(5/4)
= 10/8 You didn't multiply by the 2
Also, the sqrt can be -5/4, so
= -10/8
-------
There are 2 possible square roots, 5/4, and -5/4.
-------
i also had another question:
i dont no how to solve square roots with letters instead of numbers
for example:
square root(a^2/b^5)
sqrt%28a%5E2%2Fb%5E5%29
= sqrt%28a%5E2%2Fb%5E4%29%2Asqrt%281%2Fb%29
= %28a%2Fb%5E2%29%2Asqrt%281%2Fb%29
It's not good to have a fraction in the radical, so more work is usually done.
= %28a%2Fb%5E2%29%2Asqrt%28b%2Fb%5E2%29
= %28a%2Fb%5E3%29%2Asqrt%28b%29
= a%2Asqrt%28b%29%2Fb%5E3

Age_Word_Problems/264924: A 27-year old mother has a 5-year old daughter. In how many years will the mother be three times as old as her daughter?
A.4 B.6 C.9 D. 15 E.None of these

Answer 194917 by Alan3354(30993) About Me  on 2010-02-03 08:27:36 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!
The age difference is 22. The integers will be 3:1, so 22 is 2 times the age of the daughter, --> the daughter will be 11.
-----------------
-->B, in 6 years.

141/3 = 47, which is the middle number.
--> 45, 47, 49
I don't know what the 5 steps are, but they don't seem to be necessary.

Travel_Word_Problems/264770: At the instant the traffic light turns green, an automobile that has been waiting at an intersection starts ahead with a constant acceleration of 2.80 m/s^2. At the same instant, a truck, traveling with a constant speed of 14.7 m/s, overtakes and passes the automobile.
How far beyond its starting point does the automobile overtake the truck?
How fast is the automobile traveling when it overtakes the truck?

At the instant the traffic light turns green, an automobile that has been waiting at an intersection starts ahead with a constant acceleration of 2.80 m/s^2. At the same instant, a truck, traveling with a constant speed of 14.7 m/s, overtakes and passes the automobile.
How far beyond its starting point does the automobile overtake the truck?
How fast is the automobile traveling when it overtakes the truck?
------------------------
For the car, s = (at^2)/2 = 3.92t^2
For the truck, s = 14.7t
--------------
When the distances are equal 14.7t = 3.92t^2
3.92t^t - 14.7t = 0
t = 0 (at the light)
t = 14.7/3.92 = 3.75 seconds
At 3.75 seconds, the auto catches up to the truck.
-------------------
s = 14.7*3.75 = 55.125 meters from the light.
--------
Auto speed = 3.92*3.75 = 14.7 m/sec when it overtakes the truck

Not enough info.
To "solve" a triangle, at least 3 elements have to be given, and at least one of them a side.

Answer 194821 by Alan3354(30993) About Me  on 2010-02-02 19:52:13 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!
The "speed in still air" is called the airspeed.
It's the average of the 2 speeds given, which are called groundspeeds.
-------------
Once you find the airspeed, the windspeed is the difference between the airspeed and the groundspeed.
------------------
Airplanes don't use km/hr, they use knots. 1 knot = 1 nautical mile per hour.

the line y=0 is a tangent to the circle (x-8)^2 + (y-a)^2=16. find the value of a.
-----------------------
y=0 is the x-axis.
The radius of the circle is 4 (the square root of 16).
The center has to be 4 units from the x-axis, so
a = 4 or
a = -4

Answer 194753 by Alan3354(30993) About Me  on 2010-02-02 14:34:43 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!
If you accept that they intersect at A and B, then all you need to show is that the distance from A to B is the diameter.
r%5E2+=+20 so d%5E2+=+80
---------------
The square of the distance from A to B is
diffy%5E2+%2B+diffx%5E2
= 4%5E2+%2B+8%5E2
= 80
------
It's the same length as the diameter, so it's thru the center of the circle.
---------------
It was stated that A and B are on the circle and the line, so no proof of that was done.

Answer 194745 by Alan3354(30993) About Me  on 2010-02-02 14:03:02 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!
the line y=2x-8 meets the coordinate axes at A and B. the line AB is a diameter of the circle. find the equation of the line.
---------------
The line crosses the x-axis at y= 0, --> (4,0).
The line crosses the y-axis at x-0, --> (0,-8)
Those are the 2 points.
-----------------
The midpoint is the center of the circle.
To find the midpoint, get the average of x and y separately.
x: (0+4)/2 = 2
y: (0-8)/2 = -4
--> M (2,-4)
----------
The distance from M to A or B is the radius.

A coffee shop mixes Brazilian coffee worth $5 per kilogram with Turkish coffee worth $8 per kilogram. The mixture is to sell for $7 per kilogram. How much of the Turkish coffee should be used to make 300 kg of the mixture?
--------------
B = amount of Brazilian coffee
5B + 8(300-B) = 7*300
5B + 2400 - 8B = 2100
B = 100 kg of Brazilian
--> 200 kg of Turkish
