A car traveling 100 km/h is 70 m behind a truck traveling 75 km/h. How long will it take the car to reach the truck?
----------------
The car is gaining on the truck at 25 kph (100-75) = 25000 meters/hour
d = rt
t = d/r = 70/25000 hours
= 7/2500 hours
You didn't specify units
= 7/60,000 days

How do I write 6i divided by 1-2i as a complex number in standard form?
--------------
Get the i term out of the denominator.
Multiply NUM and DEN by the conjugate of the DEN 1+2i
----------
6i/1-2i = 6i*(1+2i)/(1-2i)*(1+2i)
= (6i-12)/(1+4)
= (-12+6i)/5

A line and a point example.
Write in standard form the eqation of a line that satisfies the given conditions. Perpendicular to 9x+3y=36, through (1,2)
-----------------
Find the slope of the line. Do that by putting the equation in slope-intercept form, y = mx + b. That means solve for y.
9x+3y = 36
3y= - 9x + 36
y = -3x + 13
The slope, m = -3
------------------
The slope of lines parallel is the same.
The slope of lines perpendicular is the negative inverse, m = +1/3
----------------
Use y = mx + b and the point (1,2) to find b.
2 = (1/3)*1 + b
b = 5/3
The equation is y = (1/3)x + 5/3 (slope-intercept form)
x - 3y = -5 (standard form)

Sub for x into 1st eqn:
2(4y+8) - 5y = 7
8y+16 - 5y = 7
3y = -9
y = -3

On the moon, the acceleration due to gravity is -1.6 meters per second per second. A stone is dropped from a cliff on the moon and hits the surface of the moon 20 seconds later.
a)How far did it fall?
s = (1/2)at^2
s = 1.6*400/2
s = 320 meters
-----------------
b)What was its velocity at impact?
v = at
v = 1.6*20 = 32 meters/sec

How do you solve 25x^4-61x^2+36=0?
It's a quadratic in x^2
-----------------------
You can factor it:
(25x^2 - 36)*(x^2 - 1) = 0
x^2 = 1
x = +1, -1
-----------
25x^2 = 36
x = +6/5, -6/5

Answer 208264 by Alan3354(31538) About Me  on 2010-03-31 15:41:22 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Use a(t) = -32 ft/sec^2 as the acceleration due to gravity. (Neglect air resistance.)
A balloon, rising vertically with a velocity of 16 feet per second, releases a sandbag at the instant when the balloon is 48 feet above the ground.
The height of the bag as a function of time in seconds is:
h(t) = -16t^2 + 16t + 48
--------------------------
a) How many seconds after its release will the bag strike the ground?
Find t when h(t) = 0
-16t^2 + 16t + 48 = 0
-t^2 + t + 3 = 0
(-t - 1)*(t -3) = 0
t = 3 seconds
Ignore the t = -1 second
----------------
b) At what velocity will it strike the ground?
vertical speed after release = 16 - 32t
= 16 - 96
= -80 ft/sec (negative is the down direction)

Rational-functions/287314: how do i graph the function 2x^2+8x+4

Answer 208241 by Alan3354(31538) About Me  on 2010-03-31 13:58:05 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!
It's not possible, since it's not a function. It's a polynomial.
If it were y = 2x^2+8x+4 then you could graph it.
-----------------
Pick values for x and find y. Plot the points, draw a curve thru them.
