Assuming that the radius of earth is 3960miles how much would a man weigh at an altitude of 1 mile above the earths surface? --------------- Different men weigh different amounts. If he weighs W on the surface (3960 miles from the CG), his weight 1 mile above the surface will be =~ 0.999495W
Linear-equations/283156: A car goes 30 miles per hour on a 1 mile track and on his second lap he wants his average speed to be 60 miles per hour. What is his speed on the second lap?(teacher said not 90 miles per hour)1 solutions Answer 205573 by Alan3354(30993)   on 2010-03-20 16:07:13 (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!A car goes 30 miles per hour on a 1 mile track and on his second lap he wants his average speed to be 60 miles per hour. What is his speed on the second lap?(teacher said not 90 miles per hour) ------------- It's not 90. The 2nd lap at 90 mph will take 40 seconds. That's 2 miles in 2 2/3 minutes, --> an overall average of 45 mph -------------------------------- You might think that since he made the 1st lap 1/2 of 60 mph, he could do the 2nd at 2x 60 mph to average 60 mph overall. The 2nd lap at 120 mph would take 30 seconds. The total time for 2 miles would be 2.5 minutes, --> 48 mph for the 2 miles. -------------------------------- 1 mile at 30 mph takes 2 minutes. 2 miles at 60 mph also takes 2 minutes, so time is up - it's not possible to average 60 mph for the 2 laps from that point. It's what is called a "trick question", the answer is surprising. ---------------------------------- However, the problem says, "on his second lap he wants his average speed to be 60 miles per hour" It doesn't say 60 mph overall. To average 60 mph on the 2nd lap, he'd go 60 mph. The wording is careless and ambiguous.
Expressions-with-variables/283172: Find the equation of the line that passes through point (4,7) and that is perpendicular to the line whose equation is y = -2x + 1. 1 solutions Answer 205565 by Alan3354(30993)   on 2010-03-20 15:36:54 (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website! Given 2 points example. Find the equation of the line thru the points (2,1) and (3,5) --------------------- This is a 2 step process. First find the slope of the line thru the points. slope, m = diffy/diffx m = (5-1)/(3-2) m = 4 --------- Now use y = mx + b with either point to find b, the y-intercept. y = mx + b 5 = 4*3 + b b = -7 ------- y = mx + b y = 4x - 7 is the answer. ------------------------ For further assistance, or to check your work, email me via the thank you note. ---------------------- A line and a point example. Write in standard form the eqation of a line that satisfies the given conditions. Perpendicular to 9x+3y=36, through (1,2) ----------------- Find the slope of the line. Do that by putting the equation in slope-intercept form, y = mx + b. That means solve for y. 9x+3y = 36 3y= - 9x + 36 y = -3x + 13 The slope, m = -3 ------------------ The slope of lines parallel have the same slope. The slope of lines perpendicular is the negative inverse, m = +1/3 ---------------- Use y = mx + b and the point (1,2) to find b. 2 = (1/3)*1 + b b = 5/3 The equation is y = (1/3)x + 5/3 (slope-intercept form) x - 3y = -5 (standard form) ------------------------ For further assistance, or to check your work, email me via the thank you note.

20 has factors of 1, 2, 4, and 5 to consider
Because of the 11x, it has to be an even number, so 1 and 5 are out.

h(2) = not zero
h(4) is too big
h(-4) = 0 That's one.
