You can put this solution on YOUR website!
The distance across the diagonal is greater than 15 yards.
The diagonal = sqrt%2815%5E2+%2B+12%5E2%29
= sqrt%28369%29
=~ 19.2 yards
--------------
It's stated that she can turn it off from 15 yards, or "up to" 15 yards. It does not say that 15 yards is the maximum, or "up to but not exceeding", so whether or not it will work from 19.2 yards is not known.

Another example of a poorly worded problem.

The "speed of the plane in still air" is called the airspeed.
It's the average of the 2 groundspeeds.
= (600 + 530)/2
= 565 mph
---------
The wind speed is the difference:
600 - 565 = 35 mph

Solved by pluggable solver: SOLVE quadratic equation (work shown, graph etc)
Quadratic equation ax%5E2%2Bbx%2Bc=0 (in our case -8x%5E2%2B30x%2B3+=+0) has the following solutons:

x%5B12%5D+=+%28b%2B-sqrt%28+b%5E2-4ac+%29%29%2F2%5Ca

For these solutions to exist, the discriminant b%5E2-4ac should not be a negative number.

First, we need to compute the discriminant b%5E2-4ac: b%5E2-4ac=%2830%29%5E2-4%2A-8%2A3=996.

Discriminant d=996 is greater than zero. That means that there are two solutions: +x%5B12%5D+=+%28-30%2B-sqrt%28+996+%29%29%2F2%5Ca.

It's a parabola.
It has 2 real roots.
It "opens upward", that is, y increases with x as x moves away from the line of symmetry.

A line and a point example.
Write in standard form the eqation of a line that satisfies the given conditions. Perpendicular to 9x+3y=36, through (1,2)
-----------------
Find the slope of the line. Do that by putting the equation in slope-intercept form, y = mx + b. That means solve for y.
9x+3y = 36
3y= - 9x + 36
y = -3x + 13
The slope, m = -3
------------------
The slope of lines parallel have the same slope.
The slope of lines perpendicular is the negative inverse, m = +1/3
----------------
Use y = mx + b and the point (1,2) to find b.
2 = (1/3)*1 + b
b = 5/3
The equation is y = (1/3)x + 5/3 (slope-intercept form)
x - 3y = -5 (standard form)

A simple one is the familiar distance = rate * time
d = rt
If you make it
t = d/r
and graph t vs r, it's a hyperbola.
It's not the classic x^2 - y^2 hyperbola, but it is a hyperbola.

Two cars drive toward each other, one driving at 60 mph and one driving at 30mph, after 10 minutes they pass, how far apart were they when they started? Is the answer 9 miles apart?
--------------
When going in opposite directions their speeds are added.
60 + 30 = 90 mph
10 mins = 1/6 hour
90 miles/hour * (1/6 hour) = 15 miles

Distance is always positive. If a direction is also specified, that might be considered positive or negative, but distance is a measure of how far apart 2 points are.
-------------
y = 2 is parallel to the x-axis, and 2 units "above" it. The distance from a point to a line is the minimum distance, which is from the point and perpendicular to the line. In this case from (0,0) to (2,0).
-------------------
The distance is 2.
