vertical distance between a wave's high point and low point is 1.8 and they cycle is repeated every 4 seconds. determine a sinusoidal equation
------------------
h(t) = 0.9*sin(2pi*t/4) t in seconds, vertical units not specified
h(t) = 0.9*sin(pi*t/2)
------------------------
use your model to determine when the boat is 0.5 abovie its mean position
0.5 = 0.9*sin(pi*t/2)
sin(pi*t/2) = 5/9 =~ 0.55555
pi*t/2 = arcsin(0.55555) =~ 0.589, 2.5526 radians
t = 0.589*2/pi
t =~ 0.375 + 4n seconds, n = 0,1,2,3,... rising
-----------------
t = 2.5526*2/pi
t =~ 1.625 + 4n seconds, n = 0,1,2,3.... falling
----------------
Or, t = (1 +/- 0.625) + 4n seconds, n = 0,1,2,3,...

A baseball is thrown straight upwards with an initial velocity of 224 ft/s.
At what time(s) does the ball reach 832 feet?
--------------------
h(t) = -16t^2 + 224t gives the height in feet as a function of t in seconds.
832 = -16t^2 + 224t
-t^2 + 14t - 52 = 0

For these solutions to exist, the discriminant b%5E2-4ac should not be a negative number.

First, we need to compute the discriminant b%5E2-4ac: b%5E2-4ac=%2814%29%5E2-4%2A-1%2A-52=-12.

The discriminant -12 is less than zero. That means that there are no solutions among real numbers.

---------------
If you set it to zero, you can find the time when it hits the ground, when h=0. That's how long it is in the air.
h(t)=-16^2+vt+s
Actually, it's h(t)=-16t^2+vt+s
h(t) = -16t^2 + 10t + 3
-16t^2 + 10t + 3 = 0

A line and a point example.
Write in standard form the eqation of a line that satisfies the given conditions. Perpendicular to 9x+3y=36, through (1,2)
-----------------
Find the slope of the line. Do that by putting the equation in slope-intercept form, y = mx + b. That means solve for y.
9x+3y = 36
3y= - 9x + 36
y = -3x + 12
The slope, m = -3
------------------
The slope of lines parallel is the same.
The slope of lines perpendicular is the negative inverse, m = +1/3
----------------
Use y = mx + b and the point (1,2) to find b.
2 = (1/3)*1 + b
b = 5/3
The equation is y = (1/3)x + 5/3 (slope-intercept form)
x - 3y = -5 (standard form)

Given 2 points example.
Find the equation of the line thru the points (2,1) and (3,5)
---------------------
This is a 2 step process. First find the slope of the line thru the points.
slope, m = diffy/diffx
m = (5-1)/(3-2)
m = 4
---------
Now use y = mx + b with either point to find b, the y-intercept.
y = mx + b
5 = 4*3 + b
b = -7
-------
y = mx + b
y = 4x - 7 is the answer.
------------------------
Another approach using determinants:
|x y 1|
|2 1 1| = 0
|3 5 1|
--------
x(1-5) - y(2-3) + 1(10-3) = 0
-4x + y + 7 = 0
y = 4x - 7
---------
