Trigonometry-basics/288384: I don't understand how to solve these two question. Can someone please explain in detail?
1. A ranger in fire tower A spots a fire at a direction of 40 degrees. A ranger in fire tower B, which is 28 miles away directly east of tower A, spots the same fire at a direction of 330 degrees. How far from tower A is the fire?
2. A boat leaves the dock and sails in a direction of 70 degrees. Once reaching its destination on the opposite shore, it sails in a direction of 272 degrees and docks 150 km north of its original starting position. What is the total distance the boat has traveled?
I appreciate your help.

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
1. A ranger in fire tower A spots a fire at a direction of 40 degrees. A ranger in fire tower B, which is 28 miles away directly east of tower A, spots the same fire at a direction of 330 degrees. How far from tower A is the fire?
---------------------------
Directions are given using North as 0/360º
Points A, B and the fire (point F) form a triangle. Side AB is 28 miles
Angle A is 90 - 40 = 50º
Angle B is 60º (330-270)
Angle F is 70º (180 - 50 - 60)
Use the law of sines to find AF
AF/sin(60) = 28/sin(70)
AF =~ 25.805 miles
------------------
2. A boat leaves the dock and sails in a direction of 70 degrees. Once reaching its destination on the opposite shore, it sails in a direction of 272 degrees and docks 150 km north of its original starting position. What is the total distance the boat has traveled?
------------------------
S = starting point
D = destination
N = point 150 km north of S
-------------------
Side SN = 150 km
Angle S = 70º
Angle D = 22º
Angle N = 88º
Use the Sine Law as above.
------------------
Getting the angles from the given directions isn't familiar to most people.
Email me and I'll send sketches showing how it's done.

I used
%28x%29%5E%284%2F3%29=81
%282x%29%5E%281%2F3%29=81
%282x%29%5E%282%2F3%29%29%5E%281%2F3%29=81%5E%282%2F3%29
which made
3x=%2881%29%5E%282%2F3%29
and then divided by 3, so
x=%2827%29%5E%281%2F3%29
Does this look right?

A line and a point example.
Write in standard form the eqation of a line that satisfies the given conditions. Perpendicular to 9x+3y=36, through (1,2)
-----------------
Find the slope of the line. Do that by putting the equation in slope-intercept form, y = mx + b. That means solve for y.
9x+3y = 36
3y= - 9x + 36
y = -3x + 13
The slope, m = -3
------------------
The slope of lines parallel is the same.
The slope of lines perpendicular is the negative inverse, m = +1/3
----------------
Use y = mx + b and the point (1,2) to find b.
2 = (1/3)*1 + b
b = 5/3
The equation is y = (1/3)x + 5/3 (slope-intercept form)
x - 3y = -5 (standard form)

x%=x+6/200
I suppose x% is x/100
x/100=x+6/200
Multiply thru by 200
2x = 200x + 6
-198x = 6
x = -1/33

Polynomials-and-rational-expressions/288344: Problem is:
%288%29%2F%282m%2B1%29-%281%29%2F%28m-2%29=%285%29%2F%282m%2B1%29
I've tried several ways, but can't come up with an answer that fits in the slot for "m". Is this unsolvable?
My most current attempt at a solution:
%288%29%2F%282m%2B1%29-%285%29%2F%282m%2B1%29=%281%29%2F%28m-2%29 by adding %281%29%2F%28m-2%29 to the left side and subtracting %285%29%2F%282m%2B1%29 from the left and adding it to the right side.
This equals %283%29%2F%282m%2B1%29=%281%29%2F%28m-2%29
I then tried multiplying each side by (m-2) which brought me to
%283m-6%29%2B%282m%2B1%29%28m-2%29=1
and broken down even further, this comes to
3m-6%2B%282m%5E2-4m%2Bm-2%29=1
which breaks down to
3m%2Bm-4m=0m and -6-2=-8 with 2m%5E2 left to fend for himself.
all that makes 2m%5E2-8=1
so I added the -8 to each side and got
2m%5E2=9
Now I'm not sure what to do (if I've even been doing it right so far)
Do I divide each side by 2 to break up the 2m%5E2 or am I already too far gone?
I could try moving the 9 back over to the left side and trying a quadratic formula, but these numbers just don't look right together. The last three problems were unsolvable, which leaves me questioning whether or not this one is, too, and if not, was I wrong on all of the other ones??
Any suggestions on what I should change or how to fix whatever I'm doing wrong?
Any help is appreciated, thank you!

Solved by pluggable solver: SOLVE quadratic equation (work shown, graph etc)
Quadratic equation ax%5E2%2Bbx%2Bc=0 (in our case 2x%5E2%2B10x%2B-3+=+0) has the following solutons:

x%5B12%5D+=+%28b%2B-sqrt%28+b%5E2-4ac+%29%29%2F2%5Ca

For these solutions to exist, the discriminant b%5E2-4ac should not be a negative number.

First, we need to compute the discriminant b%5E2-4ac: b%5E2-4ac=%2810%29%5E2-4%2A2%2A-3=124.

Discriminant d=124 is greater than zero. That means that there are two solutions: +x%5B12%5D+=+%28-10%2B-sqrt%28+124+%29%29%2F2%5Ca.

x%5B1%5D+=+%28-%2810%29%2Bsqrt%28+124+%29%29%2F2%5C2+=+0.283882181415011
x%5B2%5D+=+%28-%2810%29-sqrt%28+124+%29%29%2F2%5C2+=+-5.28388218141501

Quadratic expression 2x%5E2%2B10x%2B-3 can be factored:
2x%5E2%2B10x%2B-3+=+%28x-0.283882181415011%29%2A%28x--5.28388218141501%29
Again, the answer is: 0.283882181415011, -5.28388218141501. Here's your graph:
graph%28+500%2C+500%2C+-10%2C+10%2C+-20%2C+20%2C+2%2Ax%5E2%2B10%2Ax%2B-3+%29

Given 2 points example.
Find the equation of the line thru the points (2,1) and (3,5)
---------------------
This is a 2 step process. First find the slope of the line thru the points.
slope, m = diffy/diffx
m = (5-1)/(3-2)
m = 4
---------
Now use y = mx + b with either point to find b, the y-intercept.
y = mx + b
5 = 4*3 + b
b = -7
-------
y = mx + b
y = 4x - 7 is the answer.

9x+3y = 36
3y= - 9x + 36
y = -3x + 13
The slope, m = -3
------------------
The slope of lines parallel is the same.
The slope of lines perpendicular is the negative inverse, m = +1/3
----------------
Use y = mx + b and the point (1,2) to find b.
2 = (1/3)*1 + b
b = 5/3
The equation is y = (1/3)x + 5/3 (slope-intercept form)
x - 3y = -5 (standard form)
