Given 2 points example.
Find the equation of the line thru the points (2,1) and (3,5)
---------------------
This is a 2 step process. First find the slope of the line thru the points.
slope, m = diffy/diffx
m = (5-1)/(3-2)
m = 4
---------
Now use y = mx + b with either point to find b, the y-intercept.
y = mx + b
5 = 4*3 + b
b = -7
-------
y = mx + b
y = 4x - 7 is the answer.
------------------------
Another approach using determinants:
|x y 1|
|2 1 1| = 0
|3 5 1|
--------
x(1-5) - y(2-3) + 1(10-3) = 0
-4x + y + 7 = 0
y = 4x - 7
---------

A line and a point example.
Write in standard form the eqation of a line that satisfies the given conditions. Perpendicular to 9x+3y=36, through (1,2)
-----------------
Find the slope of the line. Do that by putting the equation in slope-intercept form, y = mx + b. That means solve for y.
9x+3y = 36
3y= - 9x + 36
y = -3x + 12
The slope, m = -3
------------------
The slope of lines parallel is the same.
The slope of lines perpendicular is the negative inverse, m = +1/3
----------------
Use y = mx + b and the point (1,2) to find b.
2 = (1/3)*1 + b
b = 5/3
The equation is y = (1/3)x + 5/3 (slope-intercept form)
x - 3y = -5 (standard form)
------------------------

Quadratic equation ax%5E2%2Bbx%2Bc=0 (in our case -2x%5E2%2B1x%2B6+=+0) has the following solutons:

x%5B12%5D+=+%28b%2B-sqrt%28+b%5E2-4ac+%29%29%2F2%5Ca

For these solutions to exist, the discriminant b%5E2-4ac should not be a negative number.

First, we need to compute the discriminant b%5E2-4ac: b%5E2-4ac=%281%29%5E2-4%2A-2%2A6=49.

Discriminant d=49 is greater than zero. That means that there are two solutions: +x%5B12%5D+=+%28-1%2B-sqrt%28+49+%29%29%2F2%5Ca.

x%5B1%5D+=+%28-%281%29%2Bsqrt%28+49+%29%29%2F2%5C-2+=+-1.5
x%5B2%5D+=+%28-%281%29-sqrt%28+49+%29%29%2F2%5C-2+=+2

Quadratic expression -2x%5E2%2B1x%2B6 can be factored:
-2x%5E2%2B1x%2B6+=+%28x--1.5%29%2A%28x-2%29
Again, the answer is: -1.5, 2. Here's your graph:

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
( r - 3 )^2 = 196
------------------
Take the square root of both sides.
r - 3 = +14
r - 3 = -14

A line and a point example.
Write in standard form the eqation of a line that satisfies the given conditions. Perpendicular to 9x+3y=36, through (1,2)
-----------------
Find the slope of the line. Do that by putting the equation in slope-intercept form, y = mx + b. That means solve for y.
9x+3y = 36
3y= - 9x + 36
y = -3x + 12
The slope, m = -3
------------------
The slope of lines parallel is the same.
The slope of lines perpendicular is the negative inverse, m = +1/3
----------------
Use y = mx + b and the point (1,2) to find b.
2 = (1/3)*1 + b
b = 5/3
The equation is y = (1/3)x + 5/3 (slope-intercept form)
x - 3y = -5 (standard form)

A motorboat travels 846 miles in 9 hours going upstream and 544 miles in 4 hours going downstream. What is the rate of the boat in still water and what is the rate of the current?
-------------
846/9 = 94 mph upstream
544/4 = 136 mph downstream
The boat's speed is the average
(94 + 136)/2 = 115 mph
--------------------
The current is the difference
115 - 94 = 21 mph

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
solve for v: -1/2=2/5v+2/3
I'll assume it's (2/5)v and not 2/(5v) or 2/(5v + 2/3)
Use parentheses, they're free.
solve for v: -1/2=(2/5)v + (2/3)
Multiply thru by 30
-15 = 12v + 20
12v = -35
v = -35/12
