What is the equation for a line that passes through (1,1) and is perpendicular to the line 4x+6Y=18?
---------------------------
See below.
Given 2 points example.
Find the equation of the line thru the points (2,1) and (3,5)
---------------------
This is a 2 step process. First find the slope of the line thru the points.
slope, m = diffy/diffx
m = (5-1)/(3-2)
m = 4
---------
Now use y = mx + b with either point to find b, the y-intercept.
y = mx + b
5 = 4*3 + b
b = -7
-------
y = mx + b
y = 4x - 7 is the answer.
------------------------
Another approach using determinants:
|x y 1|
|2 1 1| = 0
|3 5 1|
--------
x(1-5) - y(2-3) + 1(10-3) = 0
-4x + y + 7 = 0
y = 4x - 7
---------

A line and a point example.
Write in standard form the eqation of a line that satisfies the given conditions. Perpendicular to 9x+3y=36, through (1,2)
-----------------
Find the slope of the line. Do that by putting the equation in slope-intercept form, y = mx + b. That means solve for y.
9x+3y = 36
3y= - 9x + 36
y = -3x + 12
The slope, m = -3
------------------
The slope of lines parallel is the same.
The slope of lines perpendicular is the negative inverse, m = +1/3
----------------
Use y = mx + b and the point (1,2) to find b.
2 = (1/3)*1 + b
b = 5/3
The equation is y = (1/3)x + 5/3 (slope-intercept form)
x - 3y = -5 (standard form)

an airplane travels 2277km against the wind in 3 hours and 2667km with the wind in the same amount of time. what is the rate of the plane in still air and what is the rate of the wind?
------------
2277/3 = 759 km/hr
2667/3 = 889 km/hr
The plane's airspeed is the average.
(759+889)/2 = 824 km/hr
----------------
The wind speed is the difference, = 889 - 824
Wind speed = 65 km/hr

Find the point on the line y = 2x - 5 that is nearest the origin.

a. (2 , -1)
b. (1 , 2)
c. (2 , 2)
d. (-1 , 1)
----------------
The shortest distance from the origin to the line is perpendicular to the line.
The slope of y = 2x - 5 is 2.
The slope of lines perpendicular have a slope that's the negative inverse,
m = -1/2.
----------
Use y = mx + b and the point (0,0) --> y = (-1/2)x
Find where y = -x/2 intersects y = 2x - 5
-x/2 = 2x - 5
-x = 4x - 10
-5x = -10
x = 2
y = -1
--> the point (2,-1) nearest the origin

I am so confused about graphing inequalities... I am not just wanting someone to do my homework, I am trying to truly understand this!!
Graph this inequality on a plane... x<-2
---------------------------
Graph x = -2, which is a line parallel to the y-axis thru (-2,0)
x < -2 is the area to the left, not including the line.

---------------------
h(t) = -16t^2 + vt + s
v = initial velocity = 32 ft/sec
s = initial height = 48 feet
h(t) = -16t^2 + 32t + 48
------------------------
Find when h(t) = 0
-16t^2 + 32t + 48 = 0
-t^2 + 2t + 3 = 0
(-t - 1)*(t - 3) = 0
t = -1 second (Ignore)
t = 3 seconds

Given 2 points example.
Find the equation of the line thru the points (2,1) and (3,5)
---------------------
This is a 2 step process. First find the slope of the line thru the points.
slope, m = diffy/diffx
m = (5-1)/(3-2)
m = 4
---------
Now use y = mx + b with either point to find b, the y-intercept.
y = mx + b
5 = 4*3 + b
b = -7
-------
y = mx + b
y = 4x - 7 is the answer.
------------------------
Another approach using determinants:
|x y 1|
|2 1 1| = 0
|3 5 1|
--------
x(1-5) - y(2-3) + 1(10-3) = 0
-4x + y + 7 = 0
y = 4x - 7

28/(23+x) = 18/(23-x) looks right to me
Cross multiply
28*(23-x) = 18*(23+x)
644 - 28x = 414 + 18x

What i have tried: i have tried to graph it. i used the slope. And after that i got lost, because i dont understand the question itself.
-----------------------
Graphing it is ok, but it's not asked for.
You know the slope, m = 7, so find the y-intercept.
Use the point and y = mx + b to find b, the y-intercept.
2 = 7*1 + b
b = -5
-------
That makes the equation y = 7x - 5 in slope-intercept form
7x - y = 5 is the "standard form" asked for
-----------
7x - y = 5 is the answer.
