Use determinants.
|x^2 + y^2 +x +y +1|
x1^2+y1^2 x1 y1 +1|
x2^2+y2^2 x2 y2 1| = 0
x3^2+y3^2 x3 y3 1|
------------
(x1,y1), etc are the 3 points.
It looks messy, but I made an Excel sheet that does them.
It also does parabolas.

0.05 m/day * 8 days = 0.4 meters
26 + 0.4 = 26.4 meters

the length of a rectanlge is twice the width. The area is 128yd^2. I know that A=2(L)+2(w). But with this equation wouldn't it be calcutaed differently?
--------------
2L + 2W is the perimeter
Area = L*W
L = 2W
A = 2W*W = 128
W^2 = 64
W = 8
L = 16

That's not an equation, there's no equal sign.

The 1st picked is 1 of 9, then 1 of 8, 7, & 6.

But, ABCD is the same as BDCA, so divide by 4*3*2*1 = 24
--> 3024/24 = 126 different ways

factor the trinomial? -3x2 - 10x - 8
---------------
It'll be (x + b1)*(3x + b2)
---------------------------
b1 & b2 will be either:
1 & 8 or 2 & 4.
------------------
Do 3x2 + 10x + 8
It's simpler, since everything can be positive, then add one minus sign.
PS Getting the answer won't be of much benefit to you.

Graphs/329252: How to graph f(x)=3/2x-2

Answer 235972 by Alan3354(30983) About Me  on 2010-08-05 18:17:22 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!
If it's (3/2)x - 2, it's a straight line. You need 2 points.
Pick a value for x, and find f(x). Plot the point.
Do it again.
Draw a line thru them.
---------------------
If it's 3/(2x) - 2, you'll need more than 2 points.

Solve this system algerbraically.
2x+ 6y = 17
2x -10y= 9
---------------
I don't know how to do it algerbraically.
Or algebraically.
-----------------
2x+ 6y = 17
2x -10y= 9
----------- Subtract
16y = 8
y = 1/2
-----------
2x -10y= 9
2x - 5 = 9
2x = 14
x = 7

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Suppose the sides of a cube are each increased by 20%.
What is the percentage increase in the surfaace area of the solid?
Area is a function of the square of the sides.
1.2*s = 1.2^2*area
= 1.44*area
= 44% increase
----------------
What is the percentage increase in the volume of the solid?
Volume is a function of the cube of the sides.
1.2*s = 1.2^3*V
= 1.728V
= 72.8% increase

Answer 235928 by Alan3354(30983) About Me  on 2010-08-05 15:48:58 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!
M does 1/60 of the job per minute.
J does 1/55 per minute.
Together, they do 1/60 + 1/55 per minute
= 60/3300 + 55/3300
= 115/3300 per minute
--> 3300/115 minutes per job
= 660/23 minutes
=~ 28.7 minutes
-----------------
Use the shortcut, product/sum
60*55/(60 + 55)
= same answer

Quadratic_Equations/329221: Hello,
I would greatly appreciate your help on these questions.
We have seen a parabola intersecting the x-axis twice and y-axis once.
1. Does any graph of any function intersect both the axes at least once? twice? or more?
2. How about a function that doesn't intersect any of the axes? Discuss with examples.
Thanks so much for your time!

We have seen a parabola intersecting the x-axis twice and y-axis once.
1. Does any graph of any function intersect both the axes at least once? twice? or more?
No. y = 2 is parallel to the x-axis, so there's no intersection of it. Only 1 intersection of the y-axis.
------------------------------
2. How about a function that doesn't intersect any of the axes?
eg, the circle (x-5)^2 + (y-5)^2 = r^2 doesn't intersect either asix, if r is less than 5.
A circle can be composed of 2 functions. Neither half will intersect the axes.
---------------
Discuss with examples.
I did.

Speed downstream = 8/2 = 4 mph

The kayak's speed relative to the water is the average, = (4+2)/2 = 3 mph
The current is the difference, 4-3 = 1 mph
