8 3/5 = 8 + 3/5
8 = 40/5
--> 40/5 + 3/5
= 43/5
-------
24/5 = 2 and 4/5
There are no steps to get that.
I don't think this is called the "radical form", it's an "improper fraction."

Given 2 points example.
Find the equation of the line thru the points (2,1) and (3,5)
---------------------
This is a 2 step process. First find the slope of the line thru the points.
slope, m = diffy/diffx
m = (5-1)/(3-2)
m = 4
---------
Now use y = mx + b with either point to find b, the y-intercept.
y = mx + b
5 = 4*3 + b
b = -7
-------
y = mx + b
y = 4x - 7 is the answer.
------------------------
Another approach using determinants:
|x y 1|
|2 1 1| = 0
|3 5 1|
--------
x(1-5) - y(2-3) + 1(10-3) = 0
-4x + y + 7 = 0
y = 4x - 7
---------

Expressions-with-variables/342169: My daughter and I are stumped on how to set up this equation. I hope we picked the correct topic for this problem... Here's the question:
Geno worked at the China Store on Sunday packing dishes for shipment. He received 5 cents for each piece he packed successfully and was fined 12 cents for each piece he broke. If he handled 187 pieces, and was paid $8.16 how many pieces did he break?
We know it's not the correct way to do the problem, but we started by assuming that if he handled all 187 pieces without breaking any, then he would have earned $9.35. Then we started subtracting multiples of .12 to see if we could end up at $8.16. We know there's a correct way to set up the problem but couldn't get it.
Would you please give us as much detail as possible so that we (she) will be able to do similar problems on her own? Thank you so much!

Then we started subtracting multiples of .12 to see if we could end up at $8.16. We know there's a correct way to set up the problem but couldn't get it.
---------------------
Your method is the best.
Here's the usual way:
p = # of pieces packed ok
b = # of pieces broken
---------
p + b = 187 (total pieces)
5p - 12b = 816
p = 187 - b (from the 1st eqn)
Sub for p in the 2nd eqn
5(187-b) - 12b = 816
935-5b - 12b = 816
-1b = -119
b = 7
---------
The 2nd method is more work, more chance for error. Yours is better.

A line and a point example.
Write in standard form the eqation of a line that satisfies the given conditions. Perpendicular to 9x+3y=36, through (1,2)
-----------------
Find the slope of the line. Do that by putting the equation in slope-intercept form, y = mx + b. That means solve for y.
9x+3y = 36
3y= - 9x + 36
y = -3x + 12
The slope, m = -3
------------------
The slope of lines parallel is the same.
The slope of lines perpendicular is the negative inverse, m = +1/3
----------------
Use y = mx + b and the point (1,2) to find b.
2 = (1/3)*1 + b
b = 5/3
The equation is y = (1/3)x + 5/3 (slope-intercept form)
x - 3y = -5 (standard form)

Answer 244852 by Alan3354(30982) About Me  on 2010-09-12 17:43:15 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!
In 2 hours, the 1st car is 80 miles away (40*2).
The 2nd car gains on the 1st at 20 mph (60 - 40). Or, the speed of the 2nd car relative to the first is 20 mph.
-------------------
80/20 = 4 hours to overtake.
2 PM + 4 hours = 6 PM

It's a straight line, so you need 2 points.
Pick 2 values of x and find y.
Plot the 2 points.
Draw a line thru them.

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
The sum of three consecutive intergers is 90.
a. Find the three numbers by letting x represent the first integer.
x + x+1 + x+2 = 90
-------------------
b. Find the three numbers by letting x represent the second number.
x-1 + x + x+1 = 90
-------------------
The best way:
90/3 = x, the middle number

Polynomials-and-rational-expressions/342012: I need help with this equation.

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
It's not an equation, there's no equal sign.
So there's nothing to solve.
-----------
If you want to multipy that:
(3-x)*(9-6x) = 3*(9-6x) - x*(9-6x)
= 27+-+18x+-+9x+%2B+6x%5E2
= 6x%5E2+-+27x+%2B+27

m and b are the most commonly used names for those variables.
Others could be used, it's completely arbitrary.
y = sx + i would work, if the people agree on the names, or they're specified.
