on a round-trip over the same roads, a car averaged 25 mph going and 30 mph returning. If the entire trip took 5.5 hours, what is the distance each way?
My question is how can you solve how much time it took for each half of the trip?
---------------
The problem doesn't ask for that, it asks for the distance.
-----
find the avg speed:
avg speed = 2*25*30/(25+30) mi/hr
= 300/11 mi/hr
---
Then d = r*t = (300/11)*5.5 = 150 miles round trip
--> 75 miles each way.
----------------------------------
Check:
75/25 + 75/30 = 3 + 2.5 hours
= 5.5 hours
===================
Avg speed for a round trip is 2*r1*r2/(r1+r2) regardless of the distance
You can call the distance d and work out the eqn.
================================================
Another approach:
The time spent at each speed is inversely proportional to the speed but the ratio is the same as the 2 speeds.
25x + 30x = 5.5
55x = 5.5
x = 0.1
--> 2.5 hours at the faster speed, 3.0 hours at the slower speed.

i need help graphing this problem y=3-x^2
-----------------
Pick values for x and find y
Plot the points.
Draw a curve thru them.
---
eg,
x = 0, y = 3 --> (0,3)
x = 1, y = 2 --> (0,2)
Note that Pos & Neg values of x give the same y value --> 2 points for each
x = ± 2, y = -1 --> (2,-1) & (-2,-1)

Quadratic-relations-and-conic-sections/715758: equation of a tilted parabola
1 solutions

Answer 439576 by Alan3354(30993) About Me  on 2013-02-18 14:37:09 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!
First, notice that the equation of the parabola y = x^2 can be parametrized by x = t, y = t^2, as t goes from -infinity to infinity; or, as a column vector,
[x] = [t]
[y] = [t^2].

To rotate the graph of the parabola about the origin, we rotate each point individually. Rotation clockwise by 45 degrees is a linear transformation; the transformation sends the point (1, 0) to (1/sqrt(2), -1/sqrt(2)), and it sends the point (0, 1) to (1/sqrt(2), sqrt(2)). So the standard matrix for the linear transformation is

[1/sqrt(2) 1/sqrt(2)]
[-1/sqrt(2) 1/sqrt(2)]

Thus, if we apply this linear transformation to a point (t, t^2) on the graph of the parabola, we get

[1/sqrt(2) 1/sqrt(2)][t]
[-1/sqrt(2) 1/sqrt(2)][t^2]

Which gives

[(t^2 + t)/sqrt(2)]
[(t^2 - t)/sqrt(2)].

So, as t goes from -infinity to infinity, this is a parametrization of the graph of the rotated parabola. We must now convert back to x and y.

We have

[x] = [(t^2 + t)/sqrt(2)]
[y] = [(t^2 - t)/sqrt(2)]

By adding and subtracting x and y, we find

x - y = t * sqrt(2)
x + y = t^2 * sqrt(2)

Solving the first equation for t, we get t = (x - y) / sqrt(2). Plug this into the second equation:

x + y = ((x - y) / sqrt(2))^2 * sqrt(2)
x + y = ((x^2 - 2xy + y^2) / 2) * sqrt(2)
x + y = (x^2 - 2xy + y^2) / sqrt(2)
x * sqrt(2) + y * sqrt(2) = x^2 - 2xy + y^2
x^2 - 2xy + y^2 - x * sqrt(2) - y * sqrt(2) = 0.

So an equation for the parabola y = x^2 rotated clockwise by 45 degrees is

x^2 - 2xy + y^2 - x * sqrt(2) - y * sqrt(2) = 0.
