A line and a point example.
Write in standard form the eqation of a line that satisfies the given conditions. Perpendicular to 9x+3y=36, through (1,2)
-----------------
Find the slope of the line. Do that by putting the equation in slope-intercept form, y = mx + b. That means solve for y.
9x+3y = 36
3y= - 9x + 36
y = -3x + 12
The slope, m = -3
------------------
The slope of lines parallel is the same.
The slope of lines perpendicular is the negative inverse, m = +1/3
----------------
Use y = mx + b and the point (1,2) to find b.
2 = (1/3)*1 + b
b = 5/3
The equation is y = (1/3)x + 5/3 (slope-intercept form)
x - 3y = -5 (standard form)

y=-2x^2 - 8x +3
The eqn of the axis of symmetry is x = -b/2a
x = 8/-4
x = -2
--------------
The vertex is (x,f(x))
f(-2) = -2*4 + 16 + 3 = 11
= (-2,11)

Evaluation_Word_Problems/399682: Hi! Can you please help me with the following word problem: substitution?
John earned $240 in the summer by working at a fast food restraunt and baby-sitting. If he earned five times as much in the restraunt as he did baby-sitting, how much did he earn at each job?
I need an equation for it
Like, I sorta started it by saying F-fastfood and B-babysitting
So, would it be F+B=240?
I'm not sure if its right and I need to solve it too.
Thanks! :)

----------------
let f and b be the pay rate for food and baby-sitting
f = 5b
f + b = 240

Sub for f
5b + b = 240
6b = 240
b = $40
f = $200

Rectangles/399513: why does a square 45x45 have more sqaure footage than a rectangle 30x60. both could be made from the same two 90' pieces

Answer 282909 by Alan3354(30993) About Me  on 2011-01-25 14:20:14 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!
The simplest answer is that 45*45 is more than 30*60.
For a given perimeter (180 would make a 45 by 45, not 90) the max area of a rectangle is a square.
------------
For a perimeter of 180
P = 2W + 2L = 180
w + L = 90
Area = W*L = W*(90 - W)
To find the max area as a function of W:
f(W) = w(90 - W) = 90W - W^2
90W - W^2 - area = 0
-W^2 + 90W - area = 0
This is a parabola that is open downward.
The line of symmetry is W = -b/2a = -90/-2 = 45
The max is on the line of symmetry:
f(45) = 90*45 - 45^2 = 4050 - 2025
Max area = 2025 sq units
W = 45
L = 90-45 = 45
------------
Any other pair that add to 90 will have a smaller product.
It will be (45 + x)*(45 - x) = 2025 - x^2
For any x > 0, it will be less than 2025.
--------------------
Note: 2025 is the max area of a rectangle with a perimeter of 180.
A circle will have the max area of all figures.

Solved by pluggable solver: SOLVE quadratic equation (work shown, graph etc)
Quadratic equation ax%5E2%2Bbx%2Bc=0 (in our case 1x%5E2%2B-1x%2B9+=+0) has the following solutons:

x%5B12%5D+=+%28b%2B-sqrt%28+b%5E2-4ac+%29%29%2F2%5Ca

For these solutions to exist, the discriminant b%5E2-4ac should not be a negative number.

First, we need to compute the discriminant b%5E2-4ac: b%5E2-4ac=%28-1%29%5E2-4%2A1%2A9=-35.

The discriminant -35 is less than zero. That means that there are no solutions among real numbers.
