Find the area of polygon ABCD if the coordinates of the vertices are A(5,-1), B(9,2), C(9,9), and D(0,5).
-------------------
A - B - C- D-A
+5 +9 +9 +0 +5
-1 +2 +9 +5 -1
-------------------
Add diagonals from upper left
5*2 + 9*9 + 9*5 = 10 + 81 + 45 = 136
Add diagonals from lower left
-1*9 + 2*9 + 9*0 + 5*5 = -9 + 18 + 25 = 34
-----------
Difference = 102
Area = 102/2 = 51 sq units
---------------------
PS It works for any # of points.

Answer 290640 by Alan3354(31538) About Me  on 2011-02-26 12:22:37 (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!
The interior + exterior = 180
I = 5E
E + I = 180
5E + E = 180
E = 36
=========
The sum of exterior angles for ALL polygons is 360 degs
360/36 = 10 sides

decribe the y values as the line moves from left to right across the coordinate plane:7x+3y=24
----------
Solve for y
y = (-7/3)x + 8
------------
As x increases, y decreases. The slope is -7/3 so for each change of 1 in x, y decreases 7/3

Travel_Word_Problems/414335: Thanks for your help.

Shouldn't the 500 meters be converted to .5km and the 1000 meters be converted to 1km.
Same as converting 26400ft. to miles, to get mph. 26400ft./5280ft. = 5 miles.
My calculation would be (.5km + 1km / 180km/h) x 60 mins. = .5 minutes.
Which equals 30 seconds.
Question 1157: Two trains, one 500 meters long and the other 1000 meters long, are traveling in opposite directions on parallel tracks. The first train is traveling at 100km/h and the other at 80km/h. How long will it take for the trains to pass each other from the moment the locomotives are at the same point?
Answer by khwang(438) (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!
The diagram as below.
500 m 100 km/h ->
A<------>B (1st train)
C<------------->D (2nd train)
<- 80 km/h 1000 m
When they pass each other after t hrs,diagram as
A B
<------>
<------------->
C D
After t hrs, B moves 100 t km and C moves 80 t km.
So we have 100 t + 80 t = BC = CD + AB = 1000+ 500
So, 180 t = 1500, t = 25/3 hrs
[Or get t by (1000+ 500)/(100+80) directly.
Answer: it takes 25/3 hrs for the trains to pass each other
from the moment the locomotives are at the same point.
Or get t by (1000 + 500)/ (1000+ 60) directly.

The total length is 1.5 km
The relative speed is 180 km/hr = 3 km/minute
1.5/3 = 0.5 minutes
--------------------
You're right, the units have to match.

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
300 gallons of 85% alcohol has 300*0.85 = 255 gallons of alcohol
-----------
For 255 gallons to be 70%, water has to be 30%
Total = 255/0.7 = 2550/7 =~ 364.286
Add 364.219 - 300 = 64.286 gallons of water

How do you solve for x and y in this equation?
(1/2x+2)+(3y-2)i=4-7i
------------------------
Why so much white space?
Is 1/2x (1/2)x? or 1/(2x)?
Use parentheses to eliminate ambiguities.
----------------
Anyway,
(1/2x+2) = 4
and
(3y-2) = -7
-------------
You can figure it out from that. The real coefficients are equal, and the coefficients of the imaginary parts are equal.

A pebble is shot upward from the top of a building 183 meters tall. If the initial speed is 39 meters per second, how high above the ground will the pebble be after 3 seconds?
----------------------
I don't know where you got that equation, but:
h(t) = h+vt-9.8t
h(3) = 183 + 39*3 - 9.8*3
= 270.6 meters
-----------------
I would use h(t) = h + vt - 4.9t^2
h(3) = 183 + 39*3 - 4.9*9
= 255.9 meters

Surface-area/413968: if the lenght is 2 more than 4 times the width. the perimeter is 158.
is there something missing, i took it as saying the length is 4 times the width plus 2. is there a formula to break down perimeter backwards?
i came up with 15.4 as width, and 63.6 as lenght,to give me 158 for perimeter, but mainly thru trial and error method, i took a number times 4 then added 2 till i got 158, i know that wasnt the way it supposed to be done, was wondering what the formula and how work should be shown.

------------------
L = 4W + 2
Perimeter = 2L + 2W = 158
2(4W+2) + 2W = 158
4W+2 + W = 79
5W = 77
W = 15.4
---------
L = 63.6
----------
P = 2L + 2W is the only "formula" involved
PS It's length, not lenght

Linear-equations/413589: Decide whether the pair of lines is parallel, perpendicular or neither.
4x+3y=3
3x+4y=9
Here is what I have:
4x+3y=3
3y=-4x+3
y=-4/3x + 3/3 (= 1)
3x+4y=9
4y=-3x+9
y=-3/4x + 9/4
What would that make this and can you help explain the difference? I am pretty sure that parallel has the same slope and perpendicular is -1/x. I maybe be totally wrong, but I think it is neither.
Help would be appreciated.
Thank you much,

Decide whether the pair of lines is parallel, perpendicular or neither.
4x+3y=3
3x+4y=9
Here is what I have:
4x+3y=3
3y=-4x+3
y=-4/3x + 3/3 (= 1)
3x+4y=9
4y=-3x+9
y=-3/4x + 9/4
What would that make this and can you help explain the difference? I am pretty sure that parallel has the same slope and perpendicular is -1/x. I maybe be totally wrong, but I think it is neither.
-------------
The slope of the 1st eqn, m1 = -4/3
For the 2nd, m2 = -3/4
As you got above.
-------------------
If they're parallel, the slopes are equal. They're not parallel.
If they're perpendicular, the slopes are negative reciprocals. They're not perpendicular.
-----------------
The 2 slopes are inverses, but with the same sign --> neither.

A line and a point example.
Write in standard form the eqation of a line that satisfies the given conditions. Perpendicular to 9x+3y=36, through (1,2)
-----------------
Find the slope of the line. Do that by putting the equation in slope-intercept form, y = mx + b. That means solve for y.
9x+3y = 36
3y= - 9x + 36
y = -3x + 12
The slope, m = -3
------------------
The slope of lines parallel is the same.
The slope of lines perpendicular is the negative inverse, m = +1/3
----------------
Use y = mx + b and the point (1,2) to find b.
2 = (1/3)*1 + b
b = 5/3
The equation is y = (1/3)x + 5/3 (slope-intercept form)
x - 3y = -5 (standard form)
