Solved by pluggable solver: SOLVE quadratic equation (work shown, graph etc)
Quadratic equation ax%5E2%2Bbx%2Bc=0 (in our case 1x%5E2%2B6x%2B-1+=+0) has the following solutons:

x%5B12%5D+=+%28b%2B-sqrt%28+b%5E2-4ac+%29%29%2F2%5Ca

For these solutions to exist, the discriminant b%5E2-4ac should not be a negative number.

First, we need to compute the discriminant b%5E2-4ac: b%5E2-4ac=%286%29%5E2-4%2A1%2A-1=40.

Discriminant d=40 is greater than zero. That means that there are two solutions: +x%5B12%5D+=+%28-6%2B-sqrt%28+40+%29%29%2F2%5Ca.

x%5B1%5D+=+%28-%286%29%2Bsqrt%28+40+%29%29%2F2%5C1+=+0.16227766016838
x%5B2%5D+=+%28-%286%29-sqrt%28+40+%29%29%2F2%5C1+=+-6.16227766016838

Quadratic expression 1x%5E2%2B6x%2B-1 can be factored:
1x%5E2%2B6x%2B-1+=+%28x-0.16227766016838%29%2A%28x--6.16227766016838%29
Again, the answer is: 0.16227766016838, -6.16227766016838. Here's your graph:
graph%28+500%2C+500%2C+-10%2C+10%2C+-20%2C+20%2C+1%2Ax%5E2%2B6%2Ax%2B-1+%29

-----------------------
Not enough info.
How many tests make up the 71 average? Do they all count the same?
-----------
Final avg = (71*T + 86)/(T + 1)
-----------------------
T = number of tests taken for the 71%, and assuming all tests count the same.

what time will train b catch up to train a??
----------------------
Train A is 20 miles ahead at 0450 (40 mph * 0.5 hr)
Train B gains on train A at 4 mph (44- 40)
20 mi/4 mph = 5 hours

If the heights are the same, the larger cylinder is 4x the volume = 800 cc

Volume is a function of the square of the radius.

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
1. A quiz consists of 5 multiple-choice questions, each has three possible answers. In how many different ways can the quiz be answered if an answer is chosen for each question?
I said 5 x 3 = 15
It's 3^5 = 243 possibilities.
If the answers for each are A, B & C, you can have
A A A A A
A A A A B
A A A A C
A A A B A
A A A B B
A A A B C
A A A C A
A A A C B
A A A C C
etc.
You can see there are more than 15.
--------------------------------
2. In how many ways can three different math books and four different English books be arranged in a row if the books for each subject are placed together?
3 x 4 = 12
With the math books first, the 1st book can be 1 of 3, the 2nd 1 of 2, then 1
= 3*2*1 = 6
For the English books, it's 4*3*2 *1 = 24
6*24 = 144
Then the English books can be first, --> 288 ways.
----------------------------
3. In how many different ways can three finalists be selected from 15 job applicants for a second round interview?
15 x 3 = 45
It's 15*14*13 = 2730
----------------------
4. Fifteen dogs enter a Goofy Dog contest. In how many different ways can a champion, a first runner-up, and a second runner-up be selected?
15 x 3 = 45
Same as #3, 2730

I'm trying to figure how to solve 4x squared-36xy+18y squared?
Im not sure how to factor this out. This is what I've come up with this far
x(2x- )(2x- )
---------------
First, you don't solve it, you just factor it. Equations are solved, this is not an equation since there's no equal sign.
------------------
Next, you can't factor out an x since the last term 18y^2 has no x in it.
------------------
4x%5E2+-+36xy+%2B+18y%5E2
= 2%282x%5E2+-+18xy+%2B+9y%5E2%29
That's all that can be done.

Add 20 to both sides
-8x = 45 1/3
-8x = 136/3
Divide by 8
-x = 17/3
x = -17/3
