want the probability that in three throws of a die, two of the throws will have the same number.
There are 216 outcomes
There are 6 ways exactly two will occur:11,22,33,44,55,66
The third number is not the same with probability 5/6
Therefore, it is 6*(5/6)(1/6)(1/6)=5/36
That would be 30 outcomes in 216 trials
211,311,411,511,611
122,322,422,522,622, etc.
An equilateral triangle is a special case of an isosceles triangle.
So we need to add the 6 cases where all numbers are the same: 111,222,etc.
There are now 36 outcomes in 216 trials or a probability of 1/6.
