Question 1033142: The mean of a distribution that is approximately normal is 83 and the standard deviation is 3. Use the standard deviation to tell how the data is distributed with respect to the mean.
This is a new concept for me. I have a small idea of what must be done to solve, but I can't be 100% sure. Could anyone explain how to complete this problem? Thanks :)

We look at how the data is distributed about the mean in a normal distribution by using the standard deviation
:
****************************************************************************
our mean is 83 and the standard deviation is 3
:
One standard deviation(+3 and -3) about the mean covers 68% of the data
:
two standard deviations(+6 and -6) about the mean covers 95% of the data
:
three standard deviations(+9 and -9) about the mean covers 99.7% of the data
:
****************************************************************************
Suppose 95% of the students at a school were between 5.5 and 6.5 feet tall.
Then the mean is (5.5 + 6.5) / 2 = 6 feet and the standard deviation is (6.5 - 5.5) / 4 = 0.25
