81 x 15 = 1215
78 x 25 = 1950
..Total = 3165
3165/40 = 79.125
This is the combined class mean.

the mean of the girls scores was 81, 15 girls in the class
Total score = 81*15
and the mean of the boys scores was 78 there were 25 boys
Total score = 78*25
Mean score of class = (81*15 +78*25)/ ((15+25)= 79.125
