Express the following in standard form
1. 300 = 3.0 x 102
2. 0.234 = 2.34 x 10-1
3. 5746 = 5.746 x 103
4. 0.0001361 = 1.361 x 10-4
5. 256000 = 2.56 x 105

I'll do the first two problems to get you started.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Problem 1

Place the decimal point just after the 3 to get 3.00 or 3.0 basically.

Now we must move the decimal point 2 spots to the right to go from 3.0 to the original value 300.0
This "move 2 spots to the right" indicates the exponent over the 10 is 2.

Therefore we the answer is
You can replace the 3 with 3.0, but it's optional.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Problem 2

Place the decimal just after the leftmost nonzero digit.

To go from 2.34 back to 0.234, we move the decimal point 1 spot to the left.
This time the exponent is negative since we're moving left.

That's how we arrive at the answer

You can use a calculator to verify each answer.
