Question 88148

 a rectangular field is 4 times as long as it is wide . if the length is decreased by 10 in. and the width is increased by 2 in. the perimeter will be 80 in. find the dimensions of the original field

  Let the width of the field be = b =x in.
 the length of the field will be = l = 4x
 the new length of the field be =L = 4x-10
 the new width of the field be = B = x+2
 the perimeter of the field is = p = 80
                    perimeter = 2(L+B)
                            p = 2(L+B)
                            80 = 2(4x-10+x+2)
                            80 = 2(5x-8)
                            80/2 = 5x-8
                            40 = 5x-8
                            5x = 40+8 = 48
                             x = 48/5 = 9.6     4x = 4.(9.6) = 38.4
      length of the original field = 9.6 in
      width of the original field = 38.4 in
