If the equation for a graph is in the form {{{y = ax^2 + bx +c}}}, then it is a quadratic function, and it is a parabola.  If a>0, then the parabola opens upward, and if a<0, then it opens downward.  The larger the value of a, the steeper (more narrow!) the graph.  If the value of a becomes smaller, like a fraction less than 1, then the graph becomes broader.
