Does anyone know what this " / " symbol means? I am entering a contest where one needs to answer a skill testing question and they are always very simple. This is the entire question 
(5X8) + (12/3) = 

is it 12 divided by 3?

It is 12 over 3, = 4
12/3 = {{{12/3 = 4}}}

PS  Use * for multiply.  x is often used for other things.
And, ^ is used for exponents, or powers.
eg, 2^3 = 8.
