Question 516821
Please help me, I have forgot how to do addition with mixed numbers. I need help making a word problem with addition mixed numbers and the solution is 12.

Pauline wants to make cookies for her children. She has all the necessary ingredients but fear that she doesn't have enough flour to bake them. She checks and realizes that she has a bag with {{{7&1/2}}} lbs of flour, and another bag with {{{4&1/2}}} lbs of flour. How many lbs of flour, in all does she have to bake the cookies?

Since she has {{{7&1/2}}} lbs and {{{4&1/2}}} lbs, we need to add the 2 amounts to see how many lbs, in total she has

Change each mixed number's fraction into a fraction with the same denominator. In this case, the denominators are the same so no changes are necessary

..{{{7&1/2}}}

+{{{4&1/2}}}

Adding the two mixed numbers with the same denominator gives us {{{11&2/2}}}, or 11 + 1, or {{{24/2}}}, or {{{highlight_green(12)}}}
