Consider the equation as a description of a set of ordered pairs. *[tex \LARGE x\ =\ 4] means give me the set of all ordered pairs that have an *[tex \LARGE x]-coordinate equal to 4, and, oh by the way, I don't care what the *[tex \LARGE y]-coordinate is. The set of ordered pairs where *[tex \LARGE x\ =\ 4] is a vertical line that passes through the point (4,0).
