Question 9566
First you may want to draw a picture for this problem, it makes it much easier when you visualize these types of problems.

In rectangular prisms there are basicly 3 rectangles, but there are two of each different rectangle.

You need to find the area of the first rectangle.
*Note they can be done in any order, according to your preference.

Rectangle One
4ft X 5ft = 20ft^2

Since there are two of each kind of rectangle you will need to multiply it by 2.

20 X 2 = 40ft^2

Rectangle Two
6ft X 5ft = 30ft^2

30ft X 2 = 60ft^2

Rectangle Three
4ft X 6ft = 24ft^2

24 X 2 = 48ft^2

Now you combine each of the rectangle's areas together:

40ft + 60ft + 48ft = 148ft ^2

The surface area of the rectangular prism is 148ft^2
