I do not know what to do next I have tried this problem: 
0.5^x-0.25=4 I added 0.25 to both sides so now I have 0.5^x= 4.25

Get the log of both sides
x*log(0.5) = log(4.25)
x = log(4.25)/log(0.5)
x =~ -2.08746
