would the answer be 2? would you not cancel out the bottom figures t-5 and t+5?

The expression is not clear.  It could be
(1/(pit)) - 5 - (3/pit) + 5
or 1/(pit-5) - 3/(pit+5), or some other combinations.
Use some parentheses, they're free.
