Question 212451
Q.6   solve:5a+17=-8a-22

Step 1.  Given

{{{5a+17=-8a-22}}}

Step 2. Goal is to have variable terms on one side and numbers on the other side. Let's add 8a to both sides of equation. This gets rid of a terms on the right side.

{{{5a+17+8a=-8a-22+8a}}}

{{{5a+17+8a=-22}}}

{{{13a+17=-22}}}

Step 3. Subtract 17 from both sides of equation. This gets of rid of number terms on left side to obtain a terms only.

{{{13a+17-17=-22-17}}}

{{{13a=-22-17}}}

{{{13a=-39}}}

Step 4. Divide 13 from both sides of equation to solve for a.

{{{13a/13=-39/13}}}

{{{a=-39/13}}}

{{{a=-3}}}

Step 5.  Answer is a=-3

Hope the steps were helpful. Good luck in your studies.
