It often helps to include units in the calculations.

A simple example:
convert 4 feet to inches
1 ft = 12 inches --> inch/ft = 12 & ft/inch = 1/12
---
4 ft * 12 (in/ft) = 48 ft*in/ft
The feet cancel --> 48 inches
---------
If you do it wrong:
4 ft * 1ft/12 inch = 1/3 ft*ft/inch
The units are not right, so you know you did the wrong operation.
