let her have x nickels
dimes = 3x
..
total money =$ 1.40 = 140 cents
...
5x+10*3x=140
35x=140
/35
x=140/35
x = 4 the number of nickels
..
dimes = 3x = 3*4 =12
..
CHECK
12*10+4*5 = 140 cents
