We know it can't be 8 or 10, because after dividing that in half, all we have left is whole apples. It's not 1, because that's too few apples. If we have 7 apples to start, we first sell 3-1/2, plus 1/2, making 4 whole apples sold. We now have 3 apples left. Selling 3/2 apples, plus another 1/2 apple equals 3-2, or 1 apple left.
